A new Super Mario Galaxy trailer introduces Yoshi, deep cut villains, iconic traps, the Frog Suit, and much, much more!

Nintendo‘s next trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is here, and it’s pulling out all the stops! After teasing the arrival of Mario’s trusty dinosaur pal Yoshi in an after-credits scene for the first movie, the lovable, apple-snatching character is back to give the sequel some added juice. What’s more, Nintendo didn’t mess things up by making Yoshi talk, as far as we can tell. He does say “Yoshi” in the trailer, but that’s okay, that’s canon. He can do that. If they turned Yoshi into a Sonic the Hedgehog-like, fans would have burned the internet down.

Yoshi joins Mario and Luigi

In the new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Mario and his brother Luigi appear to be much more comfortable navigating the Mushroom Kingdom, as they’re now accepting jobs in what looks an awful lot like the Dusty Dune Galaxy. After powering up with Fire Flowers, the brotherly duo investigates a nearby cave, where Yoshi is waiting to make his debut. After becoming fast friends, the trailer explodes with action and Easter Eggs that give fans reasons to pause the video to look for familiar foes, returning friends, and reasons to get excited about the upcoming sequel.

Easter eggs galore!

At a cursory glance, I spotted a few exciting things in the new trailer. First and foremost is Birdo, one of my favorite Nintendo characters, full stop. I also spotted a massive Cheep Cheep, the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3, the T-Rex from Super Mario Odyssey, and my favorite Easter Egg of them all, a modified Super Scope 6! Oh, I almost forgot! In the shot revealing the Super Scope 6, Toad is holding tightly onto Baby Mario and Baby Luigi! Do the brothers transform into baby versions of themselves in the movie? Yo, if they start crying, and it doesn’t stop, I’m out! Okay, so I won’t leave the theater, but there’s only so much of that sound I can take. If you’ve played the game, you know.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is in post-production

Nintendo unveiled the trailer at a brief Nintendo Direct on Sunday morning, presented by Japanese game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto. After sharing the trailer, Miyamoto introduced Chris Meledandri of Illumination. Meledandri announced that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now in post-production, with teams focusing on sound design and music. The film’s soundtrack will feature music from Super Mario Galaxy, performed by a 70-piece orchestra.
