These pieces of concept art for The Avengers are as awesome as the movie itself

Everybody and their mother (literally in many cases) is raving about THE AVENGERS, and for good reason. It’s a landmark achievement on the part of Joss Whedon and everyone involved, and watching it was easily some of the most fun I’ve ever had at the movies.

But as every film fan knows there is so much more that goes into a movie before it even begins formally filming, and THE AVENGERS is of course no different.  Much of that work is phenomenal yet rarely seen by the public, so today’s treat of a glimpse at some of the concept art for THE AVENGERS is certainly a special one.

What follows are selections from the work posted up on the websites of two concept artists, with links that can take you to where the rest of their wonderful work awaits.  Plus, stay tuned to the end of this article for a peek at a scene that was cut sometime during the pre-production phase!

As for that cut scene: according to Jung, the art below depicts “a set not used in the movie. An opera scene of the Thor legend.” It’s certainly a cool concept, and beautiful piece of art, though I really don’t know where in the current cut of the film it could even have fit.  Each piece of action is structured impeccably in how it builds upon that which came before and there’s so much character work to be done in between battles, which is why it probably wasn’t included.  But, that doesn’t mean it isn’t still a very cool concept indeed.
