Toxic Avenger remake: Lloyd Kaufman says script is better than the original

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

I never had my fingers crossed that we'd someday get a remake of the Troma classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it HERE), but we are getting one, and it's coming from one of the few filmmakers who could make me excited to see a new take on The Toxic Avenger: writer/director Macon Blair.

Blair frequently works with Jeremy Saulnier and previously wrote and directed the Netflix release I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. I've been a fan of his for a long time (specifically, ever since Murder Party in 2007) and it sounds like Troma's Lloyd Kaufman is a fan as well.

Speaking with the folks at Dread Central, Kaufman said,

Macon Blair knows Troma better than I do. He’s seen everything. He’s seen the cartoon, he’s seen the Halloween special, he’s seen everything. And he loves our movies like Troma’s War and Terror Firmer. I’ve read the script and it’s better than the original and I leave it to him. If I’m called upon, I’d be happy to jump in. I learned on the musical to leave the creative to the creative. I learned to let them ask so if they want me, I’m there."

This new Toxic Avenger is in the works at Legendary Entertainment, and Kaufman said,

I hope that Legendary keeps going. If they let Macon Blair direct it, I think it will be terrific. He knows the Troma sense of humor, the combination of slapstick and satire with the environmental theme."

I figured The Toxic Avenger was in good hands when Blair was hired, and now we've got confirmation of that from Lloyd Kaufman.

Peter Dinklage is signed on to star in Blair's The Toxic Avenger, but it's not yet clear if he'll be playing Toxie himself or a different character.
