There’s a fourth season of True Detective coming our way, but for the first time the story of a season didn’t come from the mind of series creator Nic Pizzolatto. HBO found someone else to craft the season that’s being called True Detective: Night Country, and the creative mind behind this season is an intriguing one: Tigers Are Not Afraid director Issa López. We previously heard that López had cast Jodie Foster in a lead role, and now Variety reports that another lead role is set to be filled by professional boxer Kali Reis.
Reis made her acting debut in the 2021 kidnapping thriller Catch the Fair One, which she also developed the story for. As for her boxing record, Variety says she has “held world championships in multiple weight classes. She has a professional record of 19 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw, with her most recent fight being in November 2021. She retained both the WBA and IBO female super lightweight titles in that fight in addition to winning the vacant WBO female super lightweight title. Reis is also a motivational speaker and vocal supporter of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls movement, and teaches young Native women how to fight, both physically and vocally, against the targeting of Native youth.”
True Detective: Night Country begins when
the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, and the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
HBO’s Francesca Orsi provided the following statement:
We are tremendously excited to return to the ‘True Detective’ franchise and to be working with the multi-talented Issa López, whose singular vision for her ‘Night Country’ installment will be beautifully realized with Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the starring roles.”
True Detective: Night Country will be filming in Iceland. López is writing and directing the season, as well as serving as showrunner and executive producer. Alan Page Arriaga is also writing and executive producing. Other executive producers include Foster, Pizzolatto, Anonymous Content, Mari Jo Winkler, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Cary Joji Fukunaga, and Pastel’s Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak.
