Back in the early 1990s, there were few video games as universally known as Myst. The Mac-based game featured virtually no characters and had the player solve puzzles on a bizarre island. The game was fairly basic in execution and spawned several sequels as well as ports to video game consoles of the time. Now, over two decades later, Myst is being envisioned as a television series.
After several failed attempts at a big screen adaptation, Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to Myst and announced they would develop the series last year. Now, Deadline reports that Hulu will air the series via their streaming service. The series will be produced by THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN's Matt Tolmach from a script by TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES and DIVERGENT writer Evan Daugherty.
Written by Daugherty, Myst blends elements of science fiction and fantasy. It will explore the origins of the island of Myst from the game where a man wakes up on a mystery island with absolutely no idea who he is, where is, or how he got there.
The Hulu pick-up is a script-to-series commitment meaning if they do not like Daugherty's script they will not move forward, but if they do then an entire first season is a lock. There were apparently multiple networks interested in Myst but Hulu won the bidding war. How the series will compare to the video game is unknown but I would anticipate there would be more than a single character in the adaptation.
Myst currently has no production or release schedule barring the reception for the pilot script, but I would think that after two decades, those who have been waiting to see Myst adapted can wait a little longer.
