Twitter: Verified status will soon cost $20/month

Elon Musk Twitter

Elon Musk sure knows how to make a splash when buying a new toy. Less than one week after Musk officially purchased social media giant Twitter, it has been announced that changes will soon come for verified users that will hit their e-wallets.

As part of their updated Twitter Blue initiative, a monthly subscription service geared towards “the most engaged people on Twitter”, Twitter’s verified users will soon have to pay $19.99 per month to stay verified aka keep that cute little checkmark next to their name. Geez, what’s next? Having to buy your own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Oh…

According to The Verge, “verified users would have 90 days to subscribe or lose their blue checkmark.” In addition to that, Twitter employees working on the Twitter Blue project have until Monday, November 7th, to enact the plan or they will be fired. Imagine having your job ride on collecting $20 from Matthew Perry. No beef here, we chose Perry at random…

Elon Musk’s journey to become the world’s most famous twit (his words, not ours, but we do we mean Twitter user) has been one filled with drama. In April, Elon Musk became the company’s biggest shareholder, triggering a wave of events that saw him putting a $44 billion bid on Twitter, Musk backing out of the deal, Twitter suing Musk, and then Musk inevitably going through with the deal just last week. Let’s see–yep, that should just about catch everyone up. There are also a number of ongoing controversies surrounding some of the material he has posted regarding political figures.

What do you think of having to pay $20 per month to get and stay verified? Is it a worthwhile investment or a scam? Let us know your thoughts, verified or not, in the comments section below.
