If you thought that J.K. Rowling’s upcoming spinoff to the HARRY POTTER franchise was going to be it, you may be wrong. It now appears that Warner Bros. has the hopes to expand the cinematic universe that is home to the famous wizard in multiple directions. Aside from the FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM series that Rowling is writing, the studio has also trademarked the other ancillary books QUIDDITCH THROUGH THE AGES and THE TALES OF BEEDLE THE BARD. The Quidditch book was released in conjunction with Fantastic Beasts and was “written” by Kennilworthy Whisp and serves as a tome about the fictitious sport played by Potter and friends at Hogwarts.
According to The Daily Telegraph, WB not only trademarked the two books but also the Quidditch team names Wimbourne Wasps, Chudley Cannons and “Kenmare Kestrels. There is no way to be sure these are for big screen exploits or rather some other project, possibly a television series or video game. Since the fanfare seems to be fairly quiet regarding this project, I would think it may not be big screen bound, but you never know. They could even be incorporated into the Newt Scamander films that are coming as they will be set almost a century before the Harry Potter novels and Quidditch is clearly a long existing game in that world.
I would definitely be interested to see how these films will work. The eight HARRY POTTER movies were huge successes based on an already established fan-base who loved the novels. These new movies will be practically new even if you have read the slim volumes they are based on. Will fans turn out to see a return to the wizarding world without Harry, Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, or even Voldemort?
