After self-isolating for several months, a trip to the midlands of Ireland with Emily Blunt sounds lovely, does it not? Well, for better or worse, Bleecker Street has debuted a trailer for WILD MOUNTAIN THYME, a film from Oscar-winning Moonstruck writer John Patrick Shanley that invites us all into a complicated love triangle as well as the horrors of Christopher Walken's Irish accent.
In the film, Emily Blunt plays headstrong farmer Rosemary Muldoon (Emily Blunt) who has her heart set on winning her neighbor Anthony Reilly’s love. The problem is Anthony (Jamie Dornan) seems to have inherited a family curse and remains oblivious to his beautiful admirer. Stung by his father Tony’s (Christopher Walken) plans to sell the family farm to his American nephew (Jon Hamm), Anthony is jolted into pursuing his dreams in this comedic, moving and wildly romantic tale.
Directed and written by John Patrick Shanley, Wild Mountain Thyme is based on Shanley's own 2014 play Outside Mullingar, which had been given a Tony nom for Best Play and starred Debra Messing in her Broadway debut as Rosemary.
While the trailer paints Wild Mountain Thyme as a potential holiday heartwarmer, I must admit that today's trailer is failing to enchant me with its flighty tryst drama and butchering of the Irish tongue. Actually, I take that back. Walken's straight-up murder of what is assuredly an ear candy accent might get me to watch this thing. After all, with a star-studded cast that also includes Dearbhla Molloy, Danielle Ryan, and Barry McGovern, how excruciating can it be? Plus, the setting is as breathtaking as it gets. Perhaps there's something to this Irish romance after all.
We'll find out when Wild Mountain Thyme debuts in theaters and On-Demand this December 11th.
