Updated: Will Ferrell & Kristen Wiig making a Lifetime original movie spoof

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

UPDATE: Will Ferrell has issued a statement saying he and Kristen Wiig have cancelled their Lifetime film. Sources claimed the project was already completed, so Ferrell could be playing a joke. Here is the statement.

“We are deeply disappointed that our planned top secret project was made public,” Ferrell said in a statement. “Kristen and I have decided it is in the best interest for everyone to forgo the project entirely, and we thank Lifetime and all the people who were ready to help us make this film.”

The concept of the Lifetime Original Movie has become a joke unto itself in the twenty-five years the cable channel has existed. While melodramatic TV movies have been around far longer than Lifetime, the network has reveled in the campy and over the top nature of some of the stories they tell. Now, to commemorate and spoof their anniversary, Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig will star in their own TV movie.

A DEADLY ADOPTION is set to air this Summer on Lifetime and comes from director Rachel Lee Goldenberg (Escape From Polygamy, Love at the Christmas Table) based on a script from The Spoils of Babylon's Andrew Steele.

Ferrell and Wiig star in the dramatic thriller as a successful couple who house and care for a pregnant woman (played by 90210 alum Jessica Lowndes) with the hopes of adopting her unborn child — then things quickly go awry.

Both Ferrell and Wiig have a their supporters and detractors, but the sheer concept of a spoof treated dead seriously is hilarious to me. The Spoils of Babylon was pure insanity and worth a look for those with a demented sense of humor. They have not had many opportunities to share top billing on the big screen but their chemistry is definitely something worth watching.

A DEADLY ADOPTION will air later this year on Lifetime.
