Worlds are colliding in the first trailer for Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia

I’ll be honest – I didn’t know much about MELANCHOLIA, Lars Von Trier’s follow-up to the wackiness of ANTICHRIST. But looking at the first trailer for the film – which stars Kirsten Dunst, Keifer Sutherland and Charlotte Gainsbourg – it could be his most commercial work yet.

Of course I say that because of the obvious sci-fi undertones as the film centers around the fear that a planet hiding behind the sun is on a collision course with Earth. Or as Von Trier himself puts it, “a beautiful movie about the end of the world.” If that’s not enough to get you interest, I saw some Kirsten Dunst bewbage. (Well, I did!)

MELANCHOLIA doesn’t have a US release date yet but there are rumors of a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. And I’ll be willing to bet that all this talk of a “commercial” film from Von Trier is masking some third act weirdness that will take us all by surprise. Take a look below and see if it’s something you’re interested in checking out.
