Akiva Goldsman talks Dark Tower, says I Am Legend sequel not happening

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

If you've been sitting around patiently waiting for a sequel to 2007's Will Smith-starring I AM LEGEND then we've got some bad news for you: it's not gonna happen. But that is probably for the best as producer and writer Akiva Goldsman recently shared some of the ideas that were floating around for a prequel and sequel to I AM LEGEND with io9 and they are, to say the least, totally batshit insane.

When asked about the sequel to the 2007 hit film, Goldsman shared…

…we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. We did a really interesting prequel that [took place] later. Which was right after the first… really right when the population of of humans became pretty decimated. And it was this sort of trek to Washington. Which included a dark seeker elephant that had broken out of the zoo.

Then we did a sequel, that started with Neville again — and you realized that he was cloned. We've tried every which way. In fact if you're available you could be in the next movie. It will never happen but we really enjoyed trying to make it happen.

Goldsman has also been working on getting an adaptation of Stephen King's THE DARK TOWER off the ground for years but admits it's been a challenge.

Dark Tower really is in the ether of Hollywood. We continue to turn it over. We are definitely in the "never say die" mode. Roland has managed to keep walking for a long time and I don't want him to fall down on our watch.

I'd kill to see a great DARK TOWER adaptation happen, but I'm actually quite relieved that we won't be seeing a sequel (or prequel) to I AM LEGEND.
