Hammer Films acquires Jack the Ripper screenplay Gaslight

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Hammer Films, no doubt enjoying the success of its current theatrical hit, THE WOMAN IN BLACK, has just issued a press release announcing the acquisition of “Black List” screenplay GASLIGHT. From writer Ian Fried, the story is described as FROM HELL meets THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS:

Secretly imprisoned in a London insane asylum, the infamous Jack the Ripper helps Scotland Yard investigators solve a series of grisly murders whose victims all share the iconic death brand: dual puncture wounds to the neck.

That sure is nice of ol Saucy Jack!

Tobin Armbrust, President of Worldwide Production & Acquisitions of Exclusive Media, Hammer’s parent company, will oversee the project for Hammer.

Armbrust commented, “Ian’s script is an atmospheric thriller that reads like a Gothic SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. He does a fantastic job of weaving iconic characters into a plausible and entertaining story.”

With THE RAVEN pitting Edgar Allan Poe against a serial killer and ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER putting an ax in the hands of the 16th President of the U.S. so he can slay the undead, fabricated historical horror is as popular as it’s likely ever to be, wouldn’t you say?
