JJ Fringe’s on Fox

I’m still waiting for the next X-FILES like show to hit TV and blow me away. Yeah, there’s some good shite out there right now, but ‘supernatural’, ‘paranoia’ and all the other elements that made THE X-FILES great really hasn’t been duplicated since the show’s departure… and JJ Abrams is hoping to change all that.

The creator of LOST and the upcoming 01.18.08 has a big budget supernatural show on the horizon over at Fox called FRINGE, and if it’s anywhere as cool as it sounds, we’re all going to be in for one helluva treat! And with a budget of $10 million just for the pilot… you know it has to have at least a little bit of potential…

So what’s it all about? “Fringe” mixes elements of “The X-Files” and Paddy Chayefsky’s “Altered States” with what Abrams calls “a slight ‘Twilight Zone’ vibe.” It will focus on brilliant but possibly crazy research scientist Walter Bishop, his estranged son and a female FBI agent who brings them together.

Sure, that sounds all fine and dandy, but hearing Abrams describe it… we’re in for some good times ahead. He tells Variety “It does the stuff my favorite TV shows and movies do, which is to combine genres that shouldn’t fit together. It’s definitely meant to scare the hell out of you, but it’s also meant to make you laugh… It pushes all the buttons of things we loved from our childhood.”

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about! Considering what the guy’s produced so far, I can only smell a ‘winner’ on their hands with this one. Co-created by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the show’s now looking for a director for the pilot, as well as casting for show. If you want even more nitty gritty details on how the deal went down, go ahead and click HERE, and keep your eyes out for FRINGE, looking to air on Fox sometime next year.
