Mark Pellington says Orphanage script is better than original, sick of waiting to do it

Feb. 16, 2011by: Jake Dee

Let's help Mark Pellington and Warner Bros. make up their minds. Do you honestly wanna see an English language ORPHANAGE remake?

Well Pellington - director of such works as ARLINGTON ROAD, I MELT WITH YOU and HENRY POOLE IS HERE - is growing tired of the impasse at Warner Bros. to get THE ORPHANAGE remake off the ground. All this despite the claims that the script from Larry Fessenden and Guillermo del Toro surpasses the original Spanish screenplay.

"I think the script's better than original," he told MTV. "I think the original is really good, but I didn't have a big jones to do a remake of something. I love this script. I love this story. So that's all I can interpret."

Wow. Bold talk. Wonder if it's just bluster or fact. Either way, the script quality isn't making Warner Bros. too excited, as they're still keeping the project on the back burner.

"I don't know. That's been a year in discussion," Pellington continued. "I'm ready to go whenever they can find an actress and pull the trigger….I've been attached for a year, and it's actually because it's been delaying, delaying, delaying that I decided to do this. I was like, 'How long are you going to wait?'"

How long indeed. If it were my call, I'd say dump it...leave the original to breathe on its own. You agree or disagree? If you disagree, who should Pellington and the studio get to play the female lead?

Extra Tidbit: Belen Rueda (above) starred in the original.

The Orphanage is a solid film though it pales in comparison to some similar films (namely The Others). I would be down for another spin at it.

Pellington's a good director, Arlington Road is excellent, Mothman Prophecies is good, and U2:3D is still one of the few 3D films with some actual innovation in it. I Melt With You is getting some great reviews as well. So Henry Poole looked pretty sappy, but I can give him that one since he did it right after his wife died.

It does seem a little

It does seem a little blunt to dismiss the original screenplay like this but I generally trust Pellington to deliver the goods.

Is it better because it's in english?

Is it a double standard to say I'd be on board for a Spanish remake of Arlington Road with Juan Antonio Bayona directing?

Mark Pellington's comments come off as more arrogance then anything else and I haven't seen or heard of any of his films accept for Arlington Road which I don't even remember if I actually watched it. So he is going to improve upon the original? Doubt it. Regardless of this supposed "better then the original" script, The Orphanage is an excellent movie and should be left alone. My opinion is let this completely unnecessary remake rot in development hell where it belongs.
