Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil in testing to helm Zorro Reborn

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

I know, I know…nothing says AITH like a ZORRO flick, but everything I’ve heard about the new joint has the banded-eyed dueler amid a post-apocalyptic ruin. Could be interesting if nothing else…

And so here comes the tentative news that Peruvian filmmaker Ricardo de Montreuil (seen right) is in contention to helm ZORRO REBORN. Strangely, the director will undergo a screen test for actor Gael Garcia Bernal…not the other way around. That Gael, at a mighty 5’7″, has some damn clout then doesn’t he!

With the HARKER writers Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy working on the latest draft:

ZORRO REBORN is a futuristic reboot of the classic Zorro mythology that will not be set in California or Mexico, despite the story’s Western themes. Garcia Bernal will play the character as a masked vigilante bent on revenge.

For Montreuil, he may win the job on the back of his 2010 short THE RAVEN, which Universal looked to turn into a feature the same year. He has yet to ink a deal to helm ZORRO REBORN (set up at Fox), we shall await how his screen test with Bernal goes down.

Until then…
