The Mummy reboot may have found a Mama of a director

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

That reboot of THE MUMMY Universal Pictures is so intent on making might have just found its director: Andres Muschietti, best known as the guy who took his 5-minute short film MAMA and, with the help of Guillermo del Toro, turned said short film into a surprise $146 million worldwide success. MAMA was made for Universal, it's worth noting.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Muschietti and the studio are just "in talks" at the moment; the studio has been looking for a director ever since Len Wiseman flew the coop in July. Muschietti and Universal have apparently been talking about this since last month.

Produced by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and penned by Jon Spaihts (PROMETHEUS), THE MUMMY evidently takes place in the modern age and is described as "action-adventure tentpole with horror elements." Characters from previous installments will not return.

Check out this interview we conducted with Muschietti (and del Toro) earlier in the year to promote MAMA.
