2012 Golden Globes Recap: The Winners

“I’m holding my hands right now to cover my huge erection,” said Seth Rogen, probably speaking for a lot of us Golden Globes viewers when he hit the stage with a game Kate Beckinsale. That was probably the best line of the evening, which was a rather safe ceremony compared to last year’s, thanks mostly to an uncommonly reserved Ricky Gervais.

Nonetheless, Gervais got off a few funny lines, mainly his continued mockery of THE TOURIST, and great intros for Madonna and Colin Firth, both who more than held their own in their reply to Gervais. Madonna’s was especially funny. After he introduced her, with a smirk, as “like a virgin”, Madonna retorted with, “if I’m just like a virgin, Ricky, then why don’t you come over here and do something about it? I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years on TV”

Other high- (or low-) lights included Gervais and Meryl Streep getting bleeped, the teleprompter breaking down for Julianne Moore and Rob Lowe, and William H. Macy and wife Felicity Huffman singing the nominees for best supporting actress in a TV show. The Cecil B. DeMille tribute to Morgan Freeman was also a highlight, with Morgan Freeman appearing genuinely moved by the introduction by Sidney Poitier (he wasn’t the only one, Scorsese openly wept).

But how about the winners? Overall, it was a pretty predictable night, with lots of awards going to THE DESCENDANTS, and THE ARTIST, although Martin Scorsese was a surprise winner (to me anyway) as best director for HUGO. Jean Dujardin probably had the most affecting speech, including a nice riff on his silent inspiration for THE ARTIST, Douglas Fairbanks, and a bit of tap dancing for good measure. Dujardin also brought out his canine co-star Uggy, who the camera-people couldn’t help but focus on once THE ARTIST won for best picture, undercutting the producer’s acceptance speech somewhat. That said, Uggy is one damn cute dog.
