Alfonso Cuaron in talks to direct Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts?

05.19.2014

As reported last week, the Harry Potter spin-off trilogy, FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM, is moving forward at a rapid pace to meet the announced release date of November 18, 2016. The Potter-verse has plenty of room to tell other stories, and the saga itself grossed an insane amount of money (over 7 billion worldwide) so it was really only a matter of time before we began to explore more of what was going in that world. Despite this, I think even the most die-hard Potter fans were worried that this might simply be a cash grab, but a tweet from Nikki Finke inspires some confidence.

Alfonso Cuaron more recently earned an Academy Award for his direction on the space tale, GRAVITY, but he may be more known to Potter-heads for directing the third film in the series, HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN. At the time, the stylistic choices done in Azkaban were a stark contrast to the warm and feel-good vibes of the first two movies. However, in retrospect, we see that Cuaron completely set the tone for the rest of the saga, allowing the series and the characters to mature and progress. Even composer John Williams was pushed to take the infamous Hedwig Theme into darker territories. The end result was one of the best films in the series (my personal favorite) as well as one of John Williams' greatest film scores of the last decade.

Whether or not Cuaron takes the gig, this actually bodes well for us Potter fans. This is a sign that they are approaching this new trilogy seriously and are looking to sign on some talent to bring it to fruition. I was mildly interested before, but now they certainly have my attention.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM is set to hit theaters on November 18, 2016.

So good. POA is my absolute fave. It's so dark and mysterious. Love it.

Ya his movie was the best one. Are these books already out? Or are the based off books? If so, are they good? I wouldn't have a problem with this universe doing a deal like George Lucas did with Star Wars (I guess he sold all LucasFilm stuff as well) to a strong company like Disney that got great story tellers like JJ Abrams to do one offs and such in the universe. I think it would be important to not star Harry potter tho

Azkaban and Children of Men are two of my very favorite films, Cuaron is a cinematic genius. What he did for Potter is maybe still not fully appreciated. All those creative details, like Gilliam, not as crazy but better as a storyteller. He handles those mad British touches better than most modern-day Brits. The coo-coo clock going crazy while the vicious aunt is being inflated. The maid that knocks on the door next to Harry's and offers "Housekeeping!" Roar!! "I'll come back later". The scene

The scene where Harry's owl is seen flying across the landscape that seamlessly turn from summer to winter. A master he is the little Mexican.

That he's mexican is just cool, why do you ask? Cool that he gets the british vibe so good. Cool that a minority member, in the film industry at least, is maybe the best one there.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite book and film of the franchise. He directed is perfectly and allowed the series to shed it's sugary coat and delve into the dark and gritty tone that emerged in the book. It explored much more mature and sophisticated themes and was just fantastic. I desperately wanted him to stay on for the fourth. This could be great.

Hey, its possible to edit your own post now...just realized it myself. Me too would have preferred Cuaron to stay on with Potter, but it turned out alright after he pointed them in the right direction. This new series could be just what we wanted to see.

He did direct my favorite Potter film but I rather him not film this and focus on other projects instead.

I agree, what he could possibly come up with now after the creative freedom that Gravity should have earned him...
Yet I would love to see him at least make the first one of these, or serve as a hands-on producer.

This would be great for the new spin off franchise. He's a great director and he personally directed my favorite Harry Potter film of the franchise. So again, good pick if true.
