American Film Institute selects the 10 best films of 2011

12.12.2011

I don't want to get too into the pre-Oscar hoopla and what regional critics group selected as their Best Picture or whatever because I've already got awards fatigue and the season just started. But I don't mind the occasional Top 10 (we'll be featuring ours here next week) and the American Film Institute (AFI) just released their picks for the best films of the year.

It's an interesting list filled with some no duh choices like THE DESCENDANTS and MONEYBALL, some WTF?! additions like J. EDGAR and some pleasant surprises like BRIDESMAIDS and HUGO.

The AFI awards aren't always the best predictor of future success but last year had nine out of the ten films nominated for Best Picture on their list (though oddly they didn't include THE KING'S SPEECH, which eventually went on to win the Oscar).

The films are presented in alphabetical order with no particular ranking. Check them out below and start thinking about your Top 10...

BRIDESMAIDS
THE DESCENDANTS
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
THE HELP
HUGO
J. EDGAR
MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
MONEYBALL
THE TREE OF LIFE
WAR HORSE

GRRRRR !

I HATE when movies are selected or NOT, not because of their qualities but because of WHO made them: Last Year snorfest Hereafter for example... And this year, the ONLY reason the GREAT ANONYMOUS is not in this list is because it's a ROLAND EMMERICH film.
This movie DESERVE to be on this list. PERIOD !

Bridesmaids??!! Really??!! And I know I'm in the minority here but I just don't understand why everything thinks Drive was so awesome and groundbreaking. I thought it was pretty boring and I felt the lead character was stale. Now let's not all bash me at once.

WTF

OK...
No WARRIOR ?
No DRIVE ?
NO THANK YOU !
Although most of the other movies in this list are great too !
BUT, since last year's Clint's movie was nominated for NO OTHER REASON that it was, well an Eastwood movie (and a BAAAAD ONE), I can't avoid thinking J. EDGAR is here for the same reason and not because it's a good film (haven't seen it yet!).

Wait, why is J. Edgar a "wtf" choice? I thought it was a really fine film.

Of course, like everyone else is saying, Drive's omission is just tragic. Get used to it, though, because I doubt it'll be getting any of the recognition it deserves this awards season.

I really hope I'm wrong about that, though.

I'll give Warrior a pass. I liked it well enough but certainly not for a years best list. That said, where's motherfuckin DRIVE?!

i know everyones concern

I know alot of people are upset that movies like "Drive" and "Warrior" are absent from the list (i'm upset Muppets isnt here) but this is just one list. Its one groups opinion that doesnt effect our own views on movies. Ease up on them. Frankly i havent seen "Warrior" an anybody's list so far (aside my own). Agree or disagree, just don't get offensive.
lay off the insults and save it for the blood-bath we call "The Golden Schmoes"

what..??

No Warrior here..? Meh.. boring list.. but then again, comparing this year's production with 2010, this year sucked (with a few exceptions of course)

But 2012 is gonna rule for sure! (and then the world will end haha)

Do these ever really matter? It's really only about your personal choices.

The King's Speech was not on the list last year because it was a British production. This is the same reason The Artist or Harry Potter didn't make the list this year - they aren't American productions. Of this list 1 film will definitely make my top 10 of the year, and 1 other is a possibility. I have yet to see War Horse or Dragon Tattoo, but I am seeing Dragon Tattoo tonight.

warrior and drive not being on this list is a major sign that AFI is fucked up on these pickings.

surprising list

i still have to see quite a few more movies until i make my list but "Tree of Life" and "Bridesmaids" will NOT be on it, i really didnt like those movies.
Agreed that Warrior should be here (and The Muppets)
And just alittle side note, AFI did give special awards to Harry Potter and The Artist, so that was nice
Anyone else eagerly waiting for the Golden Schmo Awards, when it's our turn to decide the best movies?

I guarantee they're naming J. EDGAR on the list just to kiss Clint's ass.
It has a RT rating of 42%, how is that worthy for best of the year?

Who cares about the Tomato meter. J. Edgar is a very good, mature piece of filmmaking and it deserves its spot on this list.

I think it could have been a lot better. It doesn't deserve the spot over DRIVE or WARRIOR one bit.

Not surprised to see The Descendants, The Help, Moneyball, and Midnight In Paris.

Surprised to see J. Edgar, Tree of Life, Hugo, and Bridesmaids (which I loved BTW).

With Girl With The Dragon Tatoo on there, hopefully it is worth all the hype we have been hearing and seeing.

Okay, I haven't been making it out to the movies this year as much as I wanted. Still seen six of these movies. I haven't really been disappointed by anything this year, but The Help, and maybe even Moneyball, I might leave off my list of best-of. The Descendants is only overrated in the sense that everyone is praising it. It is absolutely one of the best movies I've seen this year (behind Drive).

I'm assuming The King's Speech wasn't on the list last year because it was entirely a British production. Or does that not matter to AFI?

BRIDESMAIDS was funny but is nowhere near my top ten. THE DESCENDANTS is wayyyyyyy overrated. The rest of the list I haven't seen or I like.
