Ask Abrams Trek stuff

Apr. 15, 2009by:

Have a burning question for STAR TREK rebooter JJ Abrams regarding his impending franchise kickstart? Wondering what made him boldly go, and will he again? Wish he'd diplomatically explain the absence of Shat? Curious how he feels about Tribbles? Just want to know his favorite TREK slashfic?

The site Memory Alpha is doing a "community interview" with the director, allowing fans (or even haters, presumably) to present their questions via the site. The top 20 selections will be dispatched to Jeffrey Jacob, and a lucky few inquirers will also win some TREK treats.

You've got until April 19th to submit your query to the site (questions about Abrams' past and upcoming projects are apparently also fair game, so feel free to WTF about "Lost" or "Alias"), which you can do RIGHT HERE.

RE: filmaddict

A question for you, why "can't you wait for this filk to flop?" Nothing in your posts below hinted at any spicific dislike for the film, only that it was going to tank. Why the hate on for this film? And to give context, I am a fan of JJ Abrams and the trailers for this film do look pretty badass. I for one want to see it.

Katalicious

One of the people I spoke to works at Paramount, the other at a production office for a major competing company.

Re: Filmaddicr

"...I've already spoken with people who work in the film business..." I hate to tell you, Mr Filmaddict, that your mate with the Panasonic Camcorder doesn't count as someone in "The business"...

I'm a casual TREK fan ... not a FANATIC ... I don't know WHICH of the Alien races Kirk mated with in the 6th episode of season 2, but this movie excites the daylights out of me ... The trailer looks phenomenal... and I think that film audiences are pretty savvy these days ... the phrase "Don't

The trailer looks phenomenal... and I think that film audiences are pretty savvy these days ... the phrase "Don't judge a book by it's cover" or in THIS case "Don't jugde a film by the title" comes to mind ... this isn't a movie JUST for Trek fans ... it's going to be a kick-ass action movie ... and these, dear filmaddict, have done reasonably well at the Box Office recently... Don't underestimate the power of advertising on MTV.

@RUBBERBOY

Rubberboy... I'm wondering what the hell you are talking about. You've noticed a few of my posts so far? Oh, really? Which would those be? I've posted about four times on this site, and the only other negative thing I wrote was in DEFENSE of a film (Transformers 2) b/c of nerds attacking it. Ironic that you'd claim I'm "anti-film" when, technically, I was supporting the movie, if anything...

I grew up overseas, too. Of course some people in other countries love Star Trek, but that's

I grew up overseas, too. Of course some people in other countries love Star Trek, but that's irrelevant - I'm talking in general, and it is a statistical fact that every single Star Trek film - and there have been quite a few, mind - has done poorly internationally. Even the "classics" did average business at best.

Yes, we'll see if my estimates are right. I've already spoken with people who work in the film business and are shocked at the movie's budget for the same reasons I mentioned.

Fanboys claimed Watchmen would appeal to large audiences all over the world, but obviously that didn't happen. The difference is that Watchmen wasn't a franchise with a proven track record, and Star Trek is, which makes box office forecasts all the easier to predict. It'll most likely open really big - partly because it is, indeed, being marketed to the more "casual" mainstream audiences - but there's going to be a significant drop-off in its second weekend, and without substantial business overseas - which it's almost guaranteed not to have - I have a hard time seeing how it will make back its budget let alone turn any significant profit for the studio.

I don't see how you can compare this to past Star Trek movies, since it's nothing like them, and even non fans want to see this movie.

One word: Parents. Everybody young wants to see it because it's the hip new blockbuster, but far more importantly, everyone's mom and dad want to see it because it's about freakin Star Trek. Trust me, this will be massive.

I think most people, like filmaddict, are really underestimating this movie. And no, I'm not tearing you apart.. and I'm not a Star Trek fan, by any means. I just feel like this movie is reaching out to a broader fan base with its sleak and sexy look. It's not just a Star Trek movie anymore.. that trailer appeals to the masses. When my girlfriend wants to see a Star Trek movie as much as I do, then you know this shit has gotten a broader appeal.

I've seen this preview running all over

I've seen this preview running all over ESPN and MTV... If all the people that seem interested in it will actually see it.. then I really can't see it flopping.

Ugh

Can't wait for this flick to flop. And it will flop. Even the biggest performers in this franchise have struggled to surpass this film's budget, and in order to really see any legitimate profit, it would have to cross $300 million worldwide. And Star Trek has always done quite poorly outside of the U.S. (take a look at any of the films' domestic numbers and contrast them with international figures).

It will most likely do decently during its opening weekend, but there'll be a huge drop-off

It will most likely do decently during its opening weekend, but there'll be a huge drop-off after the initial rush, and it just won't carry well overseas. It'll be another Watchmen.

And I'm sure I'll get torn apart for posting this, but once the film comes out and struggles to surpass its budget, we'll see how eager everyone is then...
