Ava DuVernay tackles an unjust prison system in new 13th trailer

The key to a good documentary is simple: take something people don’t know much about and shed light on it. The new documentary, 13TH, by Ava DuVernay does just that by focusing on the incarceration system, and how many young African American men are unjustly put behind bars, often for years at a time. As well we will get to hear about how the private sector of the prison system works to imprison people for a profit. Hence the title referencing 13th Amendment which abolishes slavery, alluding to the notion that the modern prison system is akin to slavery. Heavy stuff indeed.

But that’s just what I got from it. Who knows, it could be about aliens, featuring a cameo from the crazy-haired dude from ANCIENT ALIENS arguing that prisons bars were given to us by Martians. Watch for yourself!

Needless to say this documentary looks absolutely harrowing. For a long time many, including myself, thought of prison simply as prison. You do something bad and you go to jail, meaning all the people in jail must’ve done something bad. But that isn’t always the case. I could talk about this all day, but that would be pointless, plus I have that thing at noon. For now, it’s safe to say that 13TH will be a hot ticket for those who love documentaries which, thank the fish monster in the sky, seems to include a record-high number of people today than ever before. You know who we can thank for that? Aliens!

13TH will premiere on Netflix on October 7.

Blacks account for about 14 percent of the general U.S. population and almost half of U.S. prison population. So sorry it makes people uncomfortable to talk about reality. Let's just all shut the fuck up about it and see if it fixes itself.

Largely due to the drug epidemic, the ratio has risen for black incarceration. Crack devastated inner cities both in health and criminal activities. It's not simply race that sets blacks up to fail. The system doesn't help by punishing ex-convicts leading to recidivism. Culture doesn't help either glorifying thugs and gangstas as "the life." But to title this doc in such an inflammatory way already displays bias and an agenda that will only further polarize the country.

You seem to be very aware of these issues. Surprising you seem to say you don't want to have this conversation.

Yeah, lets stir this crock pot with a shit stick...

If the documentarians want to do a valid project, document the explosion of prison populations with the advent of the war on drugs. Worse than Prohibition, it's only led to increases in violence and instability around the globe. But hey, let's follow the race baiting angle. That will get more press.

let me preface this with "I know this isnt the place for politics, but..." speaking of 'stirring the pot', I am actually concerned about the reactions that will come of Nate Parker's "Birth of a Nation" movie this year... the pot is just about boiling over and the media keeps stoking the fire, basically insisting on a race war and further division rather than promoting unity to address ALL problems. The movie (BoaN not this doc) itself seems to be about an uprising of race v race, but at a VERY
