Cool Videos: The Mortal Kombat short film that must be turned into a movie

06.08.2010

UPDATE - Jeri Ryan (who appears in this video as Sonya Blade) confirmed on Twitter that this is NOT a game trailer but instead made by director Kevin Tancharoen (FAME) to "sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film."

Whoa.

I've seen a number of homemade or semi-professional video game films attempting to convince us that a feature would be a good idea, but absolutely none of them come anywhere close to Mortal Kombat Rebirth, a mysterious, unsourced YouTube video with insane production values and a few recognizable faces in it.

Rumor had it this was a teaser for a new game in the series, but we hear it’s actually being shopped around Hollywood to be turned into its very own film. We learned recently that Warners has been looking to reboot MK, and after watching this video, it’s clear this would be a PERFECT way to do it.

The settting appears to be grounded in some sort of remotely plausible reality (there’s no magic to be found), and it’s an incredibly brutal and black interpretation of the series and its characters, as it most definitely should be.

Trust me, I think you’ll be pretty damn impressed by this. Check it out below.

GET OVER HERE!

Update: Our boys at LatinoReview have all the answers!

The short was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who did the remake of Fame last year. Judging from this short, Kevin is the perfect director for this movie.

Jacks is played by Michael Jai White. Michael played Spawn and was in Undisputed II. Michael makes a great Jacks (Jax).

Sonya Blade is played by Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager.

Baraka was played by the very talented Lateef Crowder, who plays the Brazilian fighter in Undisputed III.

Scorpion is played by Ian Anthony Dale. Ian plays Kazuya in the upcoming big screen version of Tekken.

Johnny Cage was played by up and coming martial arts sensation Matt Mullins. Still working on who played Reptile. Will update when I find out.

The fight choreography was done by Larnell Stovall. Larnell did the fight choreography for Undisputed III and is one of the best fight choreographers in the business. You want to see the fights you deserve? Then you fans should DEMAND he be the guy in one charge for this reboot.

I know who might be playing Sub-Zero, but don't want to mention it in case it screws something up. He'd be perfect for the part.

Extra Tidbit: Who would be the hardest character to convert into a non-magical reality? Like where would Sub-Zero get his freeze powers?

Well Made But Not

How is this Mortal Kombat? Aside from the names of the characters, this is as related to that series as "Of Mice And Men" is to the "Twilight" books. Not at all.

It had some highend production, was shot well, had good action, and was pretty well made, but why call it what it isn't? Why it not change the names around, and make it an entirely original film (or as original as underground tournament fight films can be) because that's what this is.

I find it...

I find it amazing people are excited for this, yet have the gall to criticize the Resident Evil films because they have nothing to do with the games. What does this short have to with MK? Almost nothing. It's more like CSI meets Saw. Shang Tsung a crime boss? Reptile a human and homicidal maniac? Baraka a dreadlocked Jamaican? This is retarded. Well done, but retarded.

I'm completely with you. It was stylish, well done, and had plenty of atmosphere, but how in the hell is it MK?

It's not, so why call it as such?

Maybe the new game will have live-action cut scenes and we just saw the teaser for the whole thing. It's not surprising marketing wise, and video games and movies are, and will keep merging. It was well made to a certain extent but it didn't feel like a big studio movie, more like a commercial or promo reel

fuck me.

AMAZZZING!!! The realism is basically all the backstory. I hope when it comes time to enter the tournament, they suit up into their classic (yet updated) looks.

I do, however, think they should add the special powers element. That's the only thing that's missing in this otherwise fantastic version.

Count me IN

I find no problem with re-inventing Mortal Kombat, but just because they gave reptile and baraka real world origins does not mean there is not a supernatural element. Some of you guys need to get out of expecting reimaged movie story lines to follow what came before it: Just look at the mess that was Superman Returns!

ALRIGHT, HERE'S THE REAL TRUTH

This is not for a videogame, this is not from the studio, this was independently produced by Kevin Tancharoen, the director. This is HIS vision...

So there...all you people who were bitching and complaining about how THOSE DAMN STUDIOS ARE RAPING YOUR CHILDHOOD AGAIN, it turns out that you all got a bunch of sand in your vaginas for nothing.

This is actually a great short. Heck, I'd even call it a great trailer. Lately these shorts, including the two Street Fighters videos that were posted here, are of high quality production. Keep them coming. If you ask me, should there be any reboot/redo Mortal Kombat, this is definitely it.

not to stoked about the grounding in reality to a point they are changing the original STORY. I like the fights, but with the camera was slightly further away and not too close as most hollywood movies suffer today. Barak's look is ok but looks silly if they stick with that corny story. they need not do johnny cage like they did cyclops in xmen. cage is the shit and rightfully so. i still prefer if they made the movie based on all the fighters perspectives and not just pick one as the

No good or bad and really go in depth with the yin yang tao concepts of balance. we should see each perspective evenly as to why each and every one of them must do what they do. a good movie would be where u actually end up feeling sorry for certain "villains" and rooting for the unexpected. honestly i would have gone another direction with this. stick to the original story. make it kind of like smoking aces only on the concept of every perspective and no real main character.

A friend tuned me into this little film and I was very impressed. This is the kind of adaptation I like to see. No magic, no outworld, no supernatural stuff. Also giving characters real names and then having them use code names is pretty great too. This is definately the kind of video game adaptation I'd pay money to see.

So what I'm getting from everyone is that a human born with inverted eyes and skin like a reptile that also happens to eat peoples heads and a plastic surgeon with dreadlocks kills people and inserts blades into his arms and both also happen to be amazing martial arts fighters is believable.

That's what they mean by "remotely plausable reality" and it's a movie, so of course it's not based in fact. 99% or movies aren't.

No, but for a Mortal Kombat film, yes. The point here is that, for an adaptation of Mortal Kombat, this is pretty outstanding. I was very impressed with how they converted Mortal Kombat into something very grounded and "real".

Yes walking and talking monsters from another dimension is more believable because that way you wouldn't need to explain why every fighter exists. That shit just doesn't happen in the real world but in a fantasy world anything is possible. And why the fuck can't you have a respectful argument, instead you act like a fucking child because some people disagree with you. Maybe you need to get over YOURself.

Just shut up. If you don't like it, don't see it. Besides, this is only a "test" people. We have no idea who will be in the story and what will happen between now and the time this product is finished. (IF it gets off the ground.)I, for one, welcome the new take on the franchise and the hard "R" rating it should have had in the first place! Besides, what's the point of doing the same thing AGAIN? It failed the first two times. What's wrong with trying something else? Damn fanboys. Never

NOT A GOOD IDEA

ok, this is fucking stupid

they're trying to set it in the real world, when in fact reptile and baraka are not from earth realm. by not having reptile and baraka from different realms, they're treating it like earth realm is the only realm, which in fact defeats the purpose of the tournament. the fighting was cool, but the story is going to blow, HARD.

I dug it. For a lot of reasons, but my main two:
1) some new ideas would be good... the 90s movies weren't too hot - so why not mix it up?
2) people are saying that the characters are too different from the source...

Basically like every Batman villain that made it in to the Nolan movies? The Joker and Ra's al Ghul could not have been more different than their source, and people herald them as genius.

So get over it. It was cool. And I'd pay to see any movie that Michael Jai White

Big difference is, Nolan earned our respect. He proved himself as a great filmmaker long before Batman. That bought him a free pass with fans. If he wants to treat Batman super realistic, or if he wants to treat Batman like a fairy tale, fans will support him no matter what. Nolan earned it.

Batman's universe can easily be translated realistically without compromising the characters. Mortal Kombat is complete fantasy so you would have to change just about everything about the characters and then they won't even be the same characters we have come to love (In a violent way.)

Wait... so Ra's al Ghul? The immortal Egyptian who is resurrected every time he dies via a Lazarus pit is easily translated? Or the Joker, who was dropped in a vat of acid and turned white makes the leap to the real world that easily? Not really... there were significant artistic liberties taken.

Further, Nolan gained respect? So you want someone who has earned our respect to do something... how else can they do it without stretching their creative muscles? Have to earn a name for yourself

They can be easily translated without sacrificing who they are as characters. Whether or not Joker falls into a pool of chemicals or if he just paints his face he is still a sadistic killer that finds humor in his murderous ways. He may look a little different on film than he does in the comics but he is the same person pretty much.

...but why would anyone want to make Mortal Kombat "realistic"? That was good for Batman because that's how Batman works best. But not Mortal Kombat. I like the idea of Jax and Sonya being cops investigating the tournament but I prefer the fantasy setting of the other films.

It looks like a music video, and the fighting was shot well, but everything else about this is lame. The story is retarded, and the re-imagined "real world" characters are just as outlandish as the originals (which defeats the purpose it was aiming for).

If made into a movie, I predict an epic failure.

I'm frankly flabbergasted that any sane person thinks this would be an even remotely good movie. Game movies already have it bad enough trying to take the "game" out of a game and still make it appealing, so ditching the story's only distinguishing features makes the entire adaptation pointless, because at that point you might as well not constrain the film to an existing property.

Mortal Kombat isn't exactly known for its storytelling, but the fantasy aspects have always had some merit and a good writer could actually probably get a lot out of it. Removing them and then bending over backwards to try and justify all the over-the-top characters while keeping them remotely recognizable is just asinine.

That was terrible. I could give two shits less about Mortal Kombat, but the acting, directing, and writing for this short was horrible. If this film was going for realism, you'd think they wouldn't make it so hilariously cheesy.

The original Mortal Kombat was cheesy, but its world was far more believable than this ridiculous set up.

I kind of hope this gets made, so that everyone who voted green on this learns a lesson, that flash does not equal quality.

Why

Do people whine that they took the fantasy out of this... but yet people love it when they make Comic Book movies based more in reality? I mean really? This was awesome

I liked both movies, yes the sequel too, but this short trailer was so much better than those films put together. Sure it did not follow the story of the game, but so what. We saw what happened when they followed that storyline, and it was cheesy. Yes, it was fun, but in the end it was cheesy. Personally, I loved the realistic side of this, and would gladly pay to see this turned into a full-length film.

Wow, Michael Jai White, Jerri Ryan, and the guy playing Scorpion has been in a ton of movies too. My guess is this is something White was working on.

I'd pay to actually see this in the theaters rather than another shitty Sandra Bullock/Ryan Reynolds hackneyed piece of shit cop movie.

Meh. Honestly, I'm tried of everyone trying to set fantasy characters in the "real" world. It's a fad that seriously needs to go away. If you hate the fantasy so much, leave it the fuck alone.

That was epic!

Smiert Spionam has it right. Its a movie based on a fighting game. Who give a fuck about mythos as long as it keeps some of the violent tone. Give the fighters some backgound and have the tear each other a part and then you have a movie.

I wonder if this trailer would catch just as many people's interests if it wasn't Mortal Kombat related.

I genuinely feel like the interest lies more in "let's see how they made this character REAL"and less about an assassin prisoner going off to fight in some tournament.

Hardly! I think it's more of the "Holy shit, that didn't suck!" response more then anything, since that's the norm with Game-Film adaptations.

All these ppl complaining about the changes they've made kill me. "Waaahhh! They gave Baraka dreadlocks! Scorpion isn't wearing his ninja outfit! WTF?! THIS ISN'T MK!"

Its not like the story of Mortal Kombat is genius or clever or even original. In fact, the entire mythology doesn't make one lick of goddamn sense whatsoever and the only reason we all flocked to it back in the day was because it was incredibly violent and it looked cool. MK is not a superhero series that been around for decades, its a videogame series that started in the 90's, so big deal if they don't stay completely faithful. Its not like they'd be shitting on some kind of legacy here. I mean, for fucks sake, did you SEE WTF happened when they tried to adapt MK faithfully? *shudder*

All of you ust put your little fuckin' nerd rage boners away and just enjoy it for what it is.

I'm struggling to see how Mortal Kombat being only nearly a couple of decades old is relevant to this at all.

Just because Supes is a bazillion years old and MK is only eighteen or so years old doesn't mean that it's any less of a problem that Hollywood are relying on "realism" to improve their product instead of decent fantasy writing or compelling characters.

Legacy or not it has its fans. If you want to make a realism street fighting tournament movie then just do your own film....or

Why bother doing a film about Mortal Kombat if you have to change every aspect of the characters or even the more basic storyline (fighting for earth's survival).

I'm not even that big a MK fan, but I can see how, other than using MK character names, this could be a completely unrelated film.

But that's exactly it, the problem isn't always the source material.

Max Payne could've been immense if they literally just stuck to the script and picked an actor who did his research.

Instead they fucked about with it, and picked a guy who REFUSED to play the games.

Doom completely changed the story behind the game and got not better because of it.

It's not the source material that's the problem, it's the lack of effort put in to adapting it coherently.

I mean, I'd like you to

Name one video game movie that was made to be realistic that was good. The reason people want to see adaptations is because they want to see their characters come to life on film not just plaster their names to characters that somewhat resemble who they are. It's like making a Superman movie but Superman is a human that uses a jet pack to fly around because aliens shouldn't exist in the real world. Some things are just more believable when they are set in their fantasy world than in the real

Meh

Fun trailer to watch and the concept is interesting but I don't think it's great or anything. I agree with previous posts that this "fresh" take is still a bit hokey - I suppose the story behind Mortal Kombat is rather hokey to begin with anyways. If there is to be a remake, it should be as violent and gory as the video games. Blend it with some style and an R rating, and that's about all you need for this kind of movie. A realistic or smart plot isn't really necessary with this kind of

Why strip the fantasy from something like Mortal Kombat? Trying to add a sense of realism to these characters is laughable. It's laughable because no matter how much you try to change them up, they are still ridiculously over-the-top fantasy characters.

This is like remaking Star Wars, setting it in the present day, setting it on earth, and removing the Force & Lightsabers from the story. Sure, you could do that, but why would you? That just rapes the fun right out of it.

Also doesn't this idea of making them all human completely nullify the point behind Mortal Kombat?

I hate that I'm not digging this as much as everyone else. I mean it looked cool and everything, but I'd want my Mortal Kombat represented the same way I want my superheroes represented.

Same personalities and recognizable (if not altered) outfits. It's not "realism" that makes a film better, it's decent writing, directing, acting, editing, score...etc.

Batman Begins/Dark Knight wasn't brilliant because it was "real", it was brilliant because it was put together by some massively talented people.

It's going to get to a point where we're re-making Harry Potter in ten years but "darker, more real...no magic" because fantasy and non-realism will be seen as inferior. Superman, but no cape and no flying.

Excellent! Well made!

Yes it was cheesy a little trying to add realism and seriousness to these characters, but damn it was so entertaining to watch how brutal Mortal Kombat could be if done the right way, and not like the first or second movies. I'm not saying it has to be realistic serious like this, but at least brutal. Major kudos to the film maker

But they totally killed the Mythology of the games. The games were about the best fighters from different dimensions coming together to find out whos the best. That said this video still kicked ass. Michael Jai White would make a badass Jax especially when he gets his metal arms. If they want to make this into a movie then keep the visual style of the short and ditch the realism approach. The first movie handled it perfectly, they just needed to make it violent as hell like the game. Hopefully we can finally see some crazy fatalities on screen!

It sort of took everything cool about each character...and removed it.

Jax and Sonya's Military background, Scorpion's hellish anonymity, it gave Baraka dreadlocks for some unnecessary reason.

I honestly think only Cage came out of that with his personality still intact, perhaps Reptile also.

It's an nice idea but making all of the characters into human beings is a massive change in itself, so they probably shouldn't fuck about with the look of them too much.

I mean c'mon...Scorpion

Awesome little teaser, i would enjoy a mortal kombat with a realism twist. Sub-Zero is my favorite character, Most likely they will have him carrier liquid nitrogen tanks or something and have a spray nozzle near his wrist or on top of his hands. Jeri Ryan makes a hot Sonya. This is something movie studios should look into. I feel like doing a sub-zero concept now, I've seen the face just need to fill in the rest.

I was surprised though that it was Scorpion they were talking to though, I mean I figured it would have been Lui Kang or even Kano.

Wow that was amazing. That would make for a great film. Add just a lil magic though, and it's gold.

Wow

Much as I did enjoy the game way back when, games like this I always figured were best left that way. This has, at the very least, helped convince me of the potential.

Scorpion always was my favorite.

Seems like a cool concept but I don't like the realism of it. Baraka and Reptiles existence in a Mortal Kombat movie shouldn't have to be explained I don't think. They are fighters from another world. If I made a MK movie though I would cast Terry Crews as Jax and Jason Statham as Kano.

Omg that was literally a thousand times better than the old MK films! I would so pay to see this made into a full feature film.

AMAZING!

Isn't this what White did before making Black Dynamite though? He made a trailer before shopping the premise around and then got it made into a film? I hope he does the same with this!!!!
