Cool Videos: Tyrese Gibson's audition for Django Unchained

Feb. 3, 2014by: Niki Stephens

One thing I'd like to see more of is audition tapes. I've seen the ones for STAR WARS, INDIANA JONES, BREAKING BAD, and many others. It gives you a chance to see what could have been, or what was so great about a particular audition. There's also the ones where you are glad a certain actor didn't get the part. Nonetheless, it's still pretty cool.

Today, an audition submission for DJANGO UNCHAINED surfaced. So, what if Tyrese Gibson had been cast as Django instead of Jamie Foxx? We knew that Will Smith was the original choice, but I have to wonder what Quentin Tarantino thought of Gibson's portrayal. I think one of the things missing here is a certain amount of charm. Yes, Django is a hard ass but he's also charismatic.

Take a look for yourself below.

I prefered this character than the one we got. I wish Django Unchained did have a little more depth like this. Tyrese adds a level I felt that was missed in the character...A PERSONALITY and not JAMIE FOXX

Wow

Seems like a pretty tough job to make QT's writing seem boring...I was done about a minute in...he has a place in Hollywood but not Academy Award level leading roles...stick to action movies where less emotional variances are neeeed like F&F. But I respect him for trying his hardest and going after something that he really wanted but his performance would have been so obviously below Leo, Sam Jackson and Waltz that it would have blown the entire movie.

Looking at some of the comments saying how this is the worst acting you've seen/thank god he didn't get it, etc. y'all need some perspective. Jamie Foxx's audition for Collateral is out there somewhere and it's pretty crappy out of context. Aaron Paul's Breaking Bad audition? Also kinda terrible. A lot of audition tapes look bad. They're often times glorified home videos. Look up the original pilot that Always Sunny In Philadelphia got sold on the strength of. It's literally home video of

They're often times glorified home videos. Look up the original pilot that Always Sunny In Philadelphia got sold on the strength of. It's literally home video of Charlie Day and co. messing around in one of their living rooms. It's barely above the quality of my parents' home video of me doing a 'talk show' when I was 7.
Bottom line: Unless you're a bunch of producers or actors who have tons of experience making or viewing home audition tapes, I wouldn't be so judgmental.

also, I dont think Tyrese had anything in terms of a script (i didnt watch the whole video). All he has is a basic concept. The director or casting director isnt there asking, "oh hey...can you do it a bit more this way, or do so and so line that way" its litterally a taped submission. one shot boom!

Hmm...

He certainly gave it his all and he's not a bad actor, but he definitely had a bad read on the material. It felt like he was auditioning for a Milos Foreman movie, not a QT flick. He lacked any of the levity that Foxx brought to the role, or the swagger. Still I think he would've been alright in, say, 12 Years A Slave, in one of the supporting roles.

He's not really the type for Django's character

Maybe that's because I've already seen the movie. But I couldn't even follow what he was saying in the room, I started thinking he was doing Sam Jackson's part.

But I did like the outdoors shots, made me realize Gibson's face has more of a character with a lot of guilt. Django didn't really have that quality. But Gibson could pull off a character who knows he's guilty for doing something, but tries to look past it. Gotta appreciate the man going after more serious roles.
