Could we get a Daniel Craig-less sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

Jan. 31, 2013by: Alex Maidy

While THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGOON TATTOO was not the massive blockbuster Sony envisioned, that does not mean they are not looking to make a sequel. Rooney Mara would likely be back and David Fincher is still a possibility, but it looks like they may be looking for a way to excise Daniel Craig from the project.

The Hollywood Reporter says that after the massive success of SKYFALL, Craig is commanding a much larger salary which would make it difficult to move forward with production on THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE. While the novel does not feature nearly as much screen time for Mikael Blomkvist, he is still a vital character to the story. But, it would not be impossible to rework the story around his absence.

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE picks up right after the events of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and follows Lisbeth Salander as she returns to Sweden after spending a year abroad. She falls under suspicion of having committed the murder of a journalist and his girlfriend as well as her guardian, Nils Bjurman. Mikael Blomkvist has to do what he can to find her before the authorities do.

Fans of the novel will surely be upset at the change to the novel and there is no way to gauge if it would affect the box office to lose the biggest movie star in the cast. Whatever the case, with Sony having major financial woes these days, do not expect to see this movie any time soon. If we do, it may be vastly different than the novel.

Extra Tidbit: Still one of the best trailers ever.

OMG enough with the although it wasn't the hit the studio expected. Who cares what the studio thinks, this movie was great & even more faithful to the book then the swedish versions. I would be ok with them getting another actor to portray Blomkvist. Craig has Bond & is too big & these movies are all about Lisbeth, which I thought Mora did an excellent. Would love to see the other 2 movies made as ya pretty much have to anyway since they are connected. Yes you need Fincher to do them also since

I really don't want Fincher to get stuck in a franchise. Craig is Bond and after Skyfall, he can do whatever he wants. Mara was the best part of that movie by far. If one of them doen't come back, doesn't that really kill the momentum of the franchise considering it wasn't THAT successful in the first place. Its a hard movie to market.

Well this feels like a dildo in the ass

Without Craig you may as well shelve this project forever. If the first movie didn't pull in enough cash to warrant a sequel, not having Daniel Craig in the next one would eliminate you breaking even.

If there is ever a necessary remake then it should add something to the original. This one didn't. (except of the cool soundtrack)

I really enjoyed the first, and would definitely welcome a sequel. Without Craig that would be sad though!

im gonna get grief for this, but...

Why even bother finishing the trilogy? The first one was a perfect storm of actors and film makers, one that is unlikely to be repeated with the second and third movies. Also, GWTDT was one of the few movies that I actually enjoyed more than the book. Seriously, i'm not saying this because i hated the movie. On the contrary, i thought it was one of the best movies of the year. But the series i thought was completely over rated. I read all three and though only the first book was any good. The

On the contrary, i thought it was one of the best movies of the year. But the series i thought was completely over rated. I read all three and though only the first book was any good. The second and third books get slower and more drawn out as it progresses. There are scenes in there that juxtapose the rest of the book in an effort to liven it up for the readers. The pacing was horrible and couldve been cut in half and still kept the level of suspense and drama. It wouldnt be the worst thing in the world to let the fans settle for the Swedish films, Fincher's film, and leave the sequels away to focus on other projects. Even speaking from a purely business standpoint, the first one didnt make enough money to rush a trilogy, and at this point you might as well let it be.

(but if you must, just replace Daniel Craig, he was good in the film but not unrepeatable. Rooney Mara on the other hand is irreplaceable, dont bother if you can't get her back)

Is it really out of the realm of possibility to just re-cast the character? How stupid it would be to rape the novels and just write the character out.

I agree with you, but I'll be honest...I'm not likely to see the second installment at the theater without Craig. I thought he did the part very well.

That sucks. I'm a huge fan of the novels and felt that the original trilogy was a great companion to them, but Fincher's version was incredible as was Craig. To lose him and/or change the story in any way would be a tragedy.

Yeah, they should have shot it LOTR style. then they wouldn't have had this problem...that being said, I LOVED The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Was in my top 5 favorite films last year, and I hope they figure out a way to make it work...

This is just baffling. Write Mikael out? The entire foundation of Fire and Hornet's Nest is Salander coming to terms about her feelings for Blomvkist and how it develops her as a character and as a human being.

Also I don't know where you are getting the novel doesn't have nearly as much screen time for his character - it is called Millennium Trilogy for a reason, because the sequels expand on Millennium Magazine and every one on staff. One of the most common complaints, without getting

Also I don't know where you are getting the novel doesn't have nearly as much screen time for his character - it is called Millennium Trilogy for a reason, because the sequels expand on Millennium Magazine and every one on staff. One of the most common complaints, without getting into spoilers, has always been how Salander is often in the background in the sequels and that Millennium/Larsson's journalism circlejerk is more of the "main character."

If they are worried about money it would be smarter to keep James Bond as the lead (for marketing) and sit Fincher down and discuss budgeting with him. The guy spent $6,000 to CGI a hair part into Rooney Mara during a scene that lasted about ten seconds. His meticulousness as a filmmaker is just as risky.

As a fan of the series I desperately want the sequels, (especially given the made for tv quality of the Swedish sequels and some of the drastic, head scratching changes they made from the source material.) But I want proper sequels, not a mess that is the result of greedy studios. Having a Lisbeth Salander film without Mikael Blomvkist is like making a James Bond film without M. And recasting would be even worse, because rather or not people are a fan of Craig, he and Mara had great chemistry.

Either do it right or don't do it at all. I need a beer.

I think they should just film the next two back to back. The way that the next books are written, you could actually shoot Craig for a month and cover both parts in both movies. If Fincher returns, I think Craig will return. Either way ...Played with Fire is the best book in the trilogy and actually has a ridiculous amount of parallels to "The Empire Strikes Back". I've been waiting for this movie since the credits rolled on the last one.

This Happens ALL The Time...

... What's the big deal now? Actors always get paid more after a huge film or award wins. That's the business. Daniel Craig was good in the film though I feel another actor could do just as well considering how the next story focuses more on Lisbeth than Mikael. He's a good actor and I've no complaints in regard to his performances (though I did not see Dreamhouse). Hopefully, he will return. But, if he doesn't, the show will go on. It's Hollywood!

Rooney Mara was the best part of TGWTDT, not Craig. I could honestly careless if he came back. I thought his Mikael was two-dimensional and I could easily see him being recasted by someone more fitting for the role; it's not like anyone would really notice to begin with.

Please name one hit form Mr. Craig aside of Bond movies... he even wants to leave the Bond franchise after Quantum, and now hes a diva? WTF! Every other movie he made underperformed. Anyway I didnt see Finchers version, and not interested. The original trilogy is good, and Im ok with it.

Disappointed in Danny

He needs to shut up and realize he's not the "main star" of the series, Rooney is. This news puts all the prior shit-talking into perspective. He's just an ungrateful dick, who is always happy to throw everyone else under the bus when shit goes south, and it's never his fault.

In the context of this article, that makes no sense to me. He had a mega-hit. Sure, James Bond is what sold it, and he sold James Bond. The article itself doesn't quote him as saying anything, just that he might cost too much for the studio. I might agree he needs to take a pay cut and go ahead and do it (if it must be done).

Hmmm....

As a big fan of Daniel Craig, I hope I'm not discovering that he is a "diva."

I was actually looking to watch The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because he was one of the leads.

They should recast Mikail Blomkvist, IMO

Daniel Craig was completely wrong for the role, and the weakest element in the movie. I'd much prefer to see someone like John C. Reilly or another respected character actor in the role.

I'll be the first person to say that John C. Reilly could do pretty much anything, except maybe play a Swede, as he doesn't look a bit Scandinavian to me.

Daniel Craig is an ass.

For all the fuss he makes about supposedly being anti-celebrity (being a jerk to interviewers just doing their jobs, etc.), I've sure heard some terrible stories from people who have worked close to him. Apparently he's a bit of a miserable prat, and for someone who takes such a vocal stance about how acting is "just a job," I find it highly ironic that he'd demand a higher salary after the success of one film -- never mind that almost all of his non-Bond films have struggled to be successes, a

With that in mind, I love Craig as Bond and think he's a good actor. But I think he's kind of a dolt, and it's this kind of attitude that will see him struggling to find success outside of the Bond films. I mean, did anyone go to see Cowboys and Aliens because it was a Craig film? For that matter, did anyone even go to see Cowboys and Aliens? How about Dreamhouse? Defiance? Golden Compass? The dude needs to wise up.

Doesnt say anything about him demanding a higher salary. Obviously a higher wage would be needed because of competing studios

These remakes are pointless. Fincher did a great job and all, but it was pretty much the exact same film everyone could already watch for free on Netflix. Plus Noomi Rapace owned the role of Lisbeth, and Rooney Mara can't hold a candle to her.

Fincher's talents belong on something more original.
