Dan Aykroyd says Ghostbusters III is good to go and will shoot in 2013

08.02.2012

Dan Aykroyd crystal skull background

The back and forth on GHOSTBUSTERS III has gone on for far too long, and so it is with great thanks thatn I can share you with Dan Aykroyd's news about the definitive state of things regarding the project as revealed in an interview with Metro newspaper.

"Is Ghostbusters 3 finally happening?

Yes, we've got a brilliant new writer on it and we'll be passing the torch on to a new generation. We're working on it to make it just right to satisfy our fans. I'm confident we'll be in production in the next year.

It's been a long process, hasn't it?

Yes, but now we've got the studio on side. We've tried a few concepts which weren't right but now we've got a good structure and will make it happen.

Is Bill Murray doing it?

No, I can tell you he won't be involved.

How do you feel about that?

It's sad but we're passing it on to a new generation. Ghostbusters 3 can be a successful movie without Bill. My preference would be to have him involved but at this point he doesn't seem to be coming and we have to move on. It's time to make the third one."

I think the most important thing to take away from all this is that we can finally stop speculating and get on with whatever else we've all got going on.  GHOSTBUSTERS III is happening, Murray's moved on, and the stage is very possibly being set for a new franchise.  Do with that what you will.

And for those of you bummed about the hole in this movie's heart that is a lack of Bill Murray (as any sensible person should be), I present these Sexy Ghostbusters as consolation:

Sexy Ghostbusters 1

Sexy Ghostbusters 2

Sexy Ghostbuster

Extra Tidbit: Thanks to longtime reader/fan "Woburn" for passing along this information.

I'm torn

I love Aykroyd and Ghostbusters is still my favorite comedy, but number 2 sucked ass. The idea of Ghostbusters lends itself to different interchanging characters, it's not like they are super heroes or anything, any one can do it. They need to make sure they balance the comedy just right, so I'm more worried about who they cast. If they play it too goofy it is not going to work. I hope they go for actors not necessarily SNL alumni.

Fuck Bill

I'm tired of Bill's negativity. He's obviously not loyal to his fan base. I think as long as Dan is involved, he won't let us down.

I'm really having a very hard time seeing this work. I mean, it has potential, but Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis were a winning team that I don't think I have seen the likes of in any comedy since. No doubt, there have been funny groups of guys, but I just have a hard time seeing a new group of actors do the Ghostbusters justice. The fan in me is torn. I guess I will have to wait to see how this moves forward to make any kind of real judgement, but I somehow feel like 20-something

I agree with guy. Ive been saying that since the gb game came out. The series has so much more potential as a video game or a mature prime time animated series.

Glad to hear. And the bonus part is, if it's awful, nobody will ever really compare it to the original movie like they would a part III. If it's great, people will take it on board as a fantastic continuation.

Ehh

They should just continue the franchise in videogame form. I liked the Ghostbusters videogame that they made a few years ago.

People these days...

I would much rather see this happen than a remake. I mean this way we at least get to see the originals handing down the franchise instead of some new actors taking over the characters completely. Sure, I am disappointed that Murray will not be in it, Venkman has always been my favorite. However, I do love Aykroyd. This series has always been his baby, every since he and Bulschi created the idea as a vehicle to move on from SNL. Dan has been wanting to make this movie every since the 90s,

Dan has been wanting to make this movie every since the 90s, back when it was rumored that Spade and Farley were going to be handed the posatron lighter. Just let the man finish his story, stop whining, and simply don't hand over your money. I mean after all we all know that every one crying over this is going to still hand over some sort of money to see if they were right.

Akyroyd doesn't know what "and we have to move on" means...

He uses it to mean "we have to make a 3rd movie", but really he should've used it to mean what Bill Murray said: "Nobody wants to see a bunch of old men running around catching ghosts"

With a good script, good comedy director, but no teenagers

this could work, solong its no cameos for the original cast, they should be a big part of the movie anyway.
But please no teenagers, maybe actors like chris tucker, jim carrey, woody harrelson or even eddy murphy could fill in the blanks.

I agree with the Blues Brothers 2000 statement. A Ghostbusters movie sans Bill Murray is not a Ghostbusters movie. I will avoid this like the plague if Bill isn't involved in some way.

Also, if Dan Aykroyd thinks this movie will be as successful without the involvement of Bill Murray... he must be drinking too much of that Crystal Skull vodka.

I feel sorry for Aykroyd.

I mean he clearly loves this franchise and it's characters as much as we do, he's been trying to get this project going for twenty years, and at this point it's now about making that last grasp for the brass ring before he's too old to move. Part of me wants them to do it without Bill because I love guys like Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson and want to see them make good. But then the other part of me knows it'll be a turd.

Here's an idea Dan. Screw making more GB movies and get Sony working on a few more sequel video games, because that was fantastic and practically played the part of GBIII. Or better yet get a serious animation going that looks and acts like the movies (instead of a kids Saturday morning show, which I do still adore BTW). One good season of an adult written Ghostbusters show that follows on from the movies/game would be fantastic. We know Bill loves doing his voice-over work, Ernie would probably do it for free, hell even Annie Potts and William Atherton went on to do voice-over work. Do that instead.

Ghostbusters is my favorite movie of all time. But this is most certainly going to suck. No Venkmann sucks. Passing the torch sucks. Fifteen years of development hell sucks even more. We'll see but I don't expect anything from this, really.

Is it just me...

or does everyone realize that Bill is funny, but his roles aren't the greatest. IE: Charlie's Angels, Osmosis Jones, Garfield 1 AND 2, Broken Flowers, City of Ember & Passion Play!!!!!!! As much as I would love to see him in it, I do not think it is required. However, as mentioned before - I bet he shows up.

GFunk587 got it right...THOSE were Murray's best films...of the ones veddhead83 stated, I've only heard of half of them, and only seen Charlie's Angels.

This is a good time to point out that Murray's career in great films seems to have ended circa the 1990s though..

Please give it up Dan Aykroyd.

There is no possibility of it being good anymore. It hurts, but I don't want Ghostbusters 3 anymore and not many people do anymore, especially if Bill Murray isn't gonna be in it.

Hopeful but Cautious

As a lifelong Ghostbusters fan I am certainly glad that they are making a Ghostbusters III. With that being said I am very cautious with this film Not only because Bill Murray isn't involved, but because of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Twenty or so years after The Last Crusade a subpar movie was made. I would like to think that Aykroyd and Ramis would be able to put together a decent film but I won't hold my breath. After a decade and a half of promising a third movie with so many false starts

After a decade and a half of promising a third movie with so many false starts and talk about what would happen I can say that I won't believe this movie exists until my ass is in the seat and the final credits roll. I would love to see Bill come back but oh well. I don't mind my favorite movie getting a sequel that may or may not be needed. I am prepared for a piece of garbage but will I be there at midnight, yes. I can only hope that they have taken the time and care needed for a new movie. I can only hope that it's done smartly and it is original but with Sony involved I don't think that will happen. Of course the Murray non involvement could be a red herring. I don't know. I am not going to go into Nerd Rage here. Like I said I have been strung along for over a decade about this movie so when it happens if it happens it happens. Just don't fuck it up and make a good movie that is all I care about. Treat it right and if there is no Bill fans will notice but it won't be as bad. If it sucks I have the first two on DVD (Blu Ray soon) the video game, the IDW Comics to enjoy. Worse comes to worst I will break out my action figures and play with them. Good Luck and God Speed.

What was conveniently left out of this article was the end, wherein Murray looks down from his throne on high and strikes Aykroyd with a bolt of lightning.

What does Bill Murray really have to do with this movie being good or not. That franchise made a killing. It was a blockbuster sensation. Do you really think it boils down to one guy? No. There's plenty of fresh talent these days to pull off rocking a proton pack. Reboots happen all the time. And hey, at least they're not talking about replacing Peter Venkman. I say, do it.. Ghostbusters are as timeless as anything else they continue to reboot, remake or do sequels after 20 years. I'm all for

Bill is the one guy out of the bunch who continued to have a solid film career, and with that he said he wouldn't participate unless the script was good. That's why people are upset, because not only are they not getting Bill, but because they know the script isn't up to his standard, the standard of a guy who doesn't need the money as much as the others.

Okay, that's fine and I get that. Buuut remember, this is a guy that suckered himself into 2 Garfield movies. And I am pretty sure, at the end of the day, it was about a paycheck.

I like Bill Murray. I really do. It sucks he's not going to be a part of this. But I don't think this movie rides on him being in it and it has a chance of being good. That's all.

If it's passing the torch, don't call it Ghostbusters 3? I cringe to say it, but just make it more of a reboot. This doesn't bode well, although I have the sudden urge for a glass of milk...

Hey if it looks bad when the trailer comes out, dont see it. Its as simple as that. What will make or break this movie is the casting of "the new generation". But so help me god if they cast Ben Stiller or Seth Rogen as the new guys as previously speculated, i will flip out (in a bad way).

I am not on board for this and Dan Aykroyd can go suck and choke on his own dick.

As much as I love Ghostbusters, I can't imagine I'll want to see this without Murray. Although all members of that cast contributed a ton to the films, Murray was undoubtedly the star and feels borderline disrespectful to move forward without him. Best of luck to this film, but don't expect to get my $10 (or however much tickets will be by the time this releases).

I thought that Bill Murray also hold some sort of rights on Ghostbusters and the new movie must have his approval (?). I could be wrong. Well, I'm a big Ghostbusters fan and I'm excited to see Ghostbusters on the big screen again. Nevertheless, Mr. Ackroyd, don't get your hopes up.
