Director Lynne Ramsay quits Natalie Portman-led western Jane Got A Gun on first day of filming

Mar. 19, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Wow. Didn't see this one coming. Apparently, JANE DON'T GOT A GUN. On the day that production was to begin on the Natalie Portman-led western JANE GOT A GUN, director Lynne Ramsay, best known for 2011's WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, decided to quit the project by simply not showing up.  The director has been attached to the project from the start, which is based on a blacklist script by Brian Duffield.  Her motives are unclear at this time, but producer Scott Steindorff has confirmed that Ramsay has left the film, saying he is "determined to hold the picture together until they set a new director" which he expects to happen "immenently."

“I have millions of dollars invested, we’re ready to shoot, we have a great script, crew and cast,” Steindorff told Deadline. “I’m shocked and so disappointed someone would do this to 150 crew members who devoted so much time, energy, commitment and loyalty to a project, and then have the director not show up. It is insane somebody would do this to other people. I feel more for the crew and their families, but we are keeping the show going on, directors are flying in, and a replacement is imminent.”

Ramsay has a pay or play deal, which means she gets paid whether the film is shot or not, although you can surely expect that legal action will be taken.  Steindorff commented, saying:

“She was pay or play, and Marty Singer has been retained. My focus is on making this movie, but I will protect all my rights. This comes down to an irresponsible act by one person.”

Pretty crazy, right?  I don't think I've ever heard of a director not showing up for work like this, although I know there are plenty of walk offs during productions that we rarely hear about.  This is a strange case indeed.  I'm sure there's more to the story, but at this juncture it just feels like a really unprofessional move by Ramsay.  The production recently swapped out Michael Fassbender and added Jude Law due to scheduling conflicts, but it's unclear if that has anything to do with Ramsay's sudden departure.

JANE GOT A GUN, starring Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Joel Edgerton, and Rodrigo Santoro, is currently scheduled for a 2014 release and it's likely they'll find someone to fill Ramsay's shoes rather quickly.  More as this develops.

Extra Tidbit: Who would be a good last minute choice to step in for Ramsay?

Super unprofessional seeming, and since it seemed no prior indication or sign was given, seems like a dick move as well. But perhaps, there is more to it, but until then, I fully blame Ramsay for being a dick.

Extra Tidbit- Excluding Uwe Boll, literally any other director alive right now would do better than she could. 'We Need To Talk About Kevin' was so heavy handed and blandly directed it hurt; not every scene needs red in it, sweet Jesus. Also, the decision to have Ezra Miller play a

Also, the decision to have Ezra Miller play a clearly evil cartoon as opposed to say, a real person, was dumb.

Totally. Miller was dreadful. Had all the nuance of Damien in The Omen. I cracked up when he ate the whole chicken. The whole film was 2 dimensional to the point of absurdity. Glorified student film.

We Need to Talk About Kevin was the work of an amateur with a decent crew and budget. So they shouldn't be too disheartened she bailed.

Wow. Oddly enough, didn't Portman have a female director who was going to direct Thor 2, before the director was replaced or dropped out? Although I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but still kind of strange.

Wow. Director's actions aside, sounds like the producer is panicking. The last thing I expect a producer to do is go to the news outlets shouting the sky is falling. Either that or there's more than meets the eye to this piece.

Pay or play

Pay or play only works, unless I'm mistaken, this way: You get paid no matter what happens, but you only get paid your full salary if the film happens AND you work on it. It's often used as a way to get attachments for a film before it is fully financed. For example - Here's $20,000 for attaching yourself to the project. Whether the film gets financed or not, you get the $20,000. The salary comes later when we make the film.

That being said, you got to think this chick just signed her death

That being said, you got to think this chick just signed her death warrant in Hollywood. Remember the chick who directed the first "Twilight"? Well, she spurns the sequels and a huge payday, only to make "Red Riding Hood." Haven't heard from her since.

Really pay or play for directors? She's not scorsese. I hope there's more to the story than someone just taking the money and running

Way to advance the cause of female directors!
Furthermore, walking off a project will definitely help you get financing for your next picture.

That's a shame. Was really looking forward to this. Hopefully they get someone to direct this with quality real soon.

JJ Abrams should do it! (Just joking).

Woemn

they hates eachotha

- I have no evidence that that was what caused her to abandon the film. But I would bet 5 million dollars that Natalie Portman is going to announce herself as the director this week.
