Disney planning movie based on Enchanted Tiki Room attraction?

Disney has had mixed success developing movies based on their popular theme park attractions. There was, of course, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and then on the other end of the spectrum, THE COUNTRY BEARS. But that’s not stopping them from continuing the process with JUNGLE CRUISE, HAUNTED MANSION, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, TOMORROWLAND and MAGIC KINGDOM all in various forms of development. Now, might you be able to add another project to that list?

The studio has picked up the spec script TIKI from writers Ahmet Zappa and Michael Wilson, a film that’s based in the world of Polynesian mythology. While Disney says the script isn’t specifically based on Enchanted Tiki Room, the popular Disneyland attraction it’s hard to not see the similarities. Also while that spec may not have necessarily been based on the attraction, I find it hard to believe Disney will develop the project without branding it after an existing (and popular) property.

The Zappa/Wilson script is set in Hawaii and makes use of the culture’s masks and ghost stories. Should the project be retrofitted to a ENCHANTED TIKI ROOM movie, expect a new version of the classic Sherman Bros. song “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room.”
