Dylan O'Brien & Logan Lerman being eyed to play Sony/Marvel's Spider-Man?

02.11.2015

Spider-Man Dylan O'Brien Logan Lerman

Well, it didn't take long for the first Spider-Man casting rumor to surface online. Yesterday we learned Sony wants a younger actor for the role since the character will still be in high school in the films, and sources have told Variety that the studio is eyeing Dylan O'Brien (THE MAZE RUNNER, Teen Wolf) and Logan Lerman (FURY, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER) to play Peter Parker, as well as a few other actors.

Variety goes on to say actors haven't been contacted yet about possibly playing Spider-Man, and Sony will probably make a decision once they land a director for the new movie. The site also says the studio is trying to decide if it wants to go with Peter Parker again as Spider-Man, or introduce someone else as Spidey, like Miles Morales.

Sony will have to act fast since the new Spider-Man will make his debut in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. I think using Miles Morales instead of Peter Parker is a great idea, however I'm really sold on Dylan O'Brien playing the web-head. Which Spider-Man do you want to see in the Sony and Marvel films: Parker's or Morales'?

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will hit theaters on May 6, 2016, and the solo Spider-Man movie is set to be released on July 28, 2017.

Just say no to Logan Lerman

Lerman is incredibly overrated. Out of the two, I obviously choose Dylan.

Peter Parker

I am only expressing my opinion as a Spidey fan here. Personally, I would not want to see a teenaged, high school Parker alongside the Avengers cast. It would feel disconnected in a way. We've already been down that road with teenage Spidey for the last 5 films. Why not put him in with the rest of the Avengers team and make him fitting the same-age profile as the others? I think seeing a matured, yet ever-so sarcastic, Parker would just feel right and offer something fresh, especially if

I actually liked Garfield as Peter/Spider-man, and found his whit to be a more accurate portrayal than Tobey's. too bad he's out, but if it means bringing Spider-man to the MCU, I'm all fine with that.

Peter Parker

Nothing against Miles but Marvel now can make a great Spider-Man movie. I would be pissed if I didn't get a chance to see Peter Parker the way he should be done. Marvel has an amazingly positive track record and this is a character that you know they have been waiting for.
As for the casting, I go with Logan 100%

If we waited this long...

If we waited this long for Marvel to regain control of Spiderman and we don't get Peter Parker mixing it up with the Avengers that will really be a kick to the balls.

Miles Morales is stupid.....

You're coming off having to scrap Sony's entire plans for Spiderman sequels and spin-offs because the films weren't as well received as the previous ones, then you're going to start over (finally with Marvel) with someone that the vast majority of people have never heard of? If they want to go that route, they should do one more with Garfield and have him die (or lose his powers and retire) so they can hand over the reins. Starting fresh with a niche character for the biggest films coming out

Ya but the story for the MCU could be that Peter Parker is older and either dead or retired from being Spider-Man and Morales has taken over. That's exactly what they did with Ant-man/Hank Pym.

You know plays a great Peter Parker? Andrew f**king Garfield! Come Marvel! Quick re-booting Spider-Man

Dylan O'Brien? Hell no! The Maze Runner was awful and the acting was from the bottom of the monkey spanking barrel.
Logan Lerman? Absolutely! If Andrew Garfield is not welcomed with the folks at Marvel Studios, I would be down with Logan as Peter Parker.

Introducing Miles Morales without Peter Parker is a fail. Without Peter there is no Miles Morales. Additionally, Having a 13 year old boy running around with the current cast of Avengers would be horrible.

And a 16 year old Peter Parker is any better? Yes, if there has never been a spider-man movie before than it wouldn't make sense to start off with Morales, but that's not the case. We've had 5 Spider-Man movies with Peter Parker. They can do it to where Peter Parker is either dead or retired from the tights and Morales has taken over.

I don't care how many Spider Man movies have come out. I've not waited this long for Marvel to regain control to not have Peter Parker teaming up with the Avengers from this point forward. Peter Parker has been Spiderman since 1962 and that is who I want to see onscreen in the Avengers.

The more I think about it, Lerman would make a great Peter Parker, but not a tough enough Spider Man. And with O'Brien it would be the opposite. Lousy Peter Parker and great Spider Man.

Whoever they choose has to have the balance of the duality that the role requires.

Lehman would just need to get into shape, which is never a problem for actors in Hollywood when it's from a multi-million dollar series.
Also, Peter Parker/Spider-Man is not suppose to be a tough guy unlike Captain America or Thor. Parker is less tough and more gentle, caring, nerdy, heart of gold kid, Herman's got that persona. He can play Spider-Man, outside of the times when it's a stunt double doing the Spider-Man action in the suit or a CGI Spider-Man figure.

Parker may be a nerd, but Spider-Man is confident and quick-witted, and Lerman does not convey that persona. Lerman's persona may have been good if they were looking to do the origin again, but we're not looking at an origin. We're looking at an established Spidey.

Miles needs an Origin story, better to keep this one as Parker.
IF it's between these 2... DYLAN DAMNIT, PICK DYLAN. STOP THINKING ABOUT IT AND GET DYLAN RIGHT NOW!
That being said, if Spiderman gets a netflix series, I want Miles/Donald Glover

Keep it Parker NOT Morales

What's with everyone wanting Morales in this movie. The only person they would look to play him would be Michael B. Jordan and he is off ruining a different comic franchise.

Everyone already knows Peter Parker, they already said they are skipping the origin story so that basically means it will be Parker to help soften to blow to idiots who will be confused.

I have high hopes they will pick the right guy and really out of the two listed, the kid from Fury is the better actor.

Not another Peter Parker

Let's be honest, to most of us Peter Parker is the only SpiderMan. However introducing another actor as Peter Parker within the last 8 years is a little much. I'm liking the idea of Morales only because it would seem alot less like another reboot, and would be easier to accept in the MCU.

I'm astounded at the number of green comments

Perhaps the the young adults took the day off work today and are home supporting this garbage.
I'm sick of the same character played by multiple actors. It really does take away from the integrity of it all. It was bad enough we got a Spider Man remake immediately after the Toby series, but now we have to put up with another actor. NO THANK YOU. And please, children, grow past your immature taste in teen flicks like Paranormal Activity 4 and demand better value for your money.

Peter Parker is who the world knows which equals money. Plus he is Spider-Man when you think about Spider-Man, Miles would be too risky. Out of those two, I have already shown my support for Obrien I thought he was good in Maze Runner and this will give him another series to sink his teeth into and be a big star, plus he had the teen angst down good in some of the episodes I have seen of Teen Wolf. To quote Rango; "Lerman is wooden, there I said it" I have sat through all the Percy Jackson

I agree with the Soloist though, Yelchin would be great as Parker as well, and if they really wanted to go younger Asa Butterfield from Enders Game could work.

I'm kind of leaning more towards wanting Peter Parker for the new Spiderman, based solely on the two choices listed above. I think either one of them would be great in the role. That being said, if they're able to find a good actor for Miles Morales, then I would be all for it.

No Morales

Spider-Man is my favorite super-hero and I would hate to see another franchise ruined. I think that they should keep Parker instead of going with Morales. Peter Parker is and always will be Spider-Man, I would be okay if they end up killing him off at some point and someone takes over his spot, but I would prefer the to set up a solid Parker story-line that we can get attached to. I think out of these two Logan Lerman would be a good option. But I am still sold on Donald Glover playing Peter

Stay with Parker, make him some well told films not just greedy franchise concoctions. Then maybe use Morales later on. Keep Parker young. Maybe even a teenager. It will make him stand out much more among the Avengers and it's one of his most interesting features. Don't tell the origins if not only in brief flashback. Introduce more characters from the comics. Make a damn good Green Goblin. Don't make all the villains spring out of Oscorp.

I really enjoy him in every film he has done, I think he has a great career ahead of him. He's so young and taking a risk on Spider-Man could potentially hurt his career. He should stick to the films he's doing now, and keep developing before he does a super hero film.

Logan Lerman

I hope its more than a rumor and Logan is really being considered for the part. He's my first choice to play Spidey. He's played a variety of roles: a playboy so to speak, a nerd, and action hero... so I know he could handle it. But now since I know who O'Brien is, I would be okay if he got the role too. However, I've only seen him in one movie, The Maze Runner.

Miles Morales came a long time after I stopped reading comic books...and even since then, all the animated cartoon series that I've watched have gone with Parker. As annoying as hell Parker is in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon series, I'm going to go with Peter Parker every time. Would Marvel even take such a risk, going with Miles Morales?

Not even a competition. 'The Perks Of Being A Wallflower' was the most underrated movie of 2012. Lerman is fantastic and I'd love for him to get it just to draw attention to his terrific work in smaller films like 'Perks' and 'Fury'.

After the bad taste that Amazing Spider Man 1 and 2 left, I would find it hard to believe that Marvel would go the Miles Morales route and not redeem the character of Peter Parker/Spider Man.

And I've stated before that my top choice for the role is Anton Yelchin, but if it ends up being one of these two guys, I would be happy with it. They both look the part and Lerman has grown stronger as an actor with Perks of Being a Wallflower, and Fury.

Hear Me Out

There is an element to playing Spiderman that I think most fans forget about when casting is concerned. We have heard that Maguire was a good Parker while Garfield was a good Spiderman. There is an element to playing Spiderman that I think most fans forget about when casting is concerned. We have heard that Maguire was a good Parker while Garfield was a good Spiderman. We center on the acting, and rightfully so. However, let's not forget that physique plays a role in selling the character too. I couldn't stand the short and stocky build of Maguire's Spiderman. Never once did I buy him in the suit! Garfield, however, had the tall and slender physique that I think is required to pull it off. His problem was that most people hated him outside the suit. Whoever they pick, and there are plenty of actors in Hollywood to choose from, let it be someone that makes the viewer want to be the guy in the suit b/c, after all, that is what it is all about; not a nerd with daddy issues. That's another movie.

I was a big fan of Garfield in and out of the suit, but I always felt like I was in the minority. Maybe it's a case of the haters being the loudest. I don't know.

Both seems good for me, actually.
I'll go for Peter over Miles, because, Miles is unknown to most people and it would be confusing for movigoers... Except if they do an origin story and we don't want that AGAIN now do we ?!
I don't think they will unmask him in CW because, yet again, with an unestablished character it would be useless. But he MIGHT be the cause of the registration act, considering he would be the only MCU character with a secret identity...

Tough choice but I'd go with Logan Lerman. Like Zedlander said, he's a better known actor.

Being the better known actor doesn't make him right for the part.

He's not a wooden actor as some say. He's talented, just not multi-talented. He does drama, not comedy or the comedic elements of roles. His performance in Fury was good, but didn't suggest traits that would be good for Spider-Man.

Logan Lerman is the better known actor but I find him quite wooden. I don't know O'Brien but he definitely looks the part.

I think they should stick with Peter Parker because the general public know him, and his origin story so you don't have to delve into that. Introduce Parker and then, down the line, rather than reboot again you can pass the torch to Miles in a natural progression.

Like I said

Dylan O' Brien was my first choice as stated before and I think they should stick with Peter Parker and play him out before introducing any other type (lesser known) of Spider-Man like Miles Morales

Logan Lerman is as dynamic as piece of cardboard. I really hope Marvel wouldn't be so dumb as to waste this wonderful new opportunity on him.

I'm not familiar with O'Brien and I think that's a good thing. Whoever they cast should be an unknown of little-known. That will give him an under-dog or rookie status standing next to RDJ and Chris Evans.

PARKER!!!!!

My inner child is screaming Peter Parker. It's the character I grew up with. Once he's been done justice in the MCU. After that then sure. I don't know the character but sure, bring on the Miles fellow. But Parker first please.

Im actually tired of all the Miles Morales talk. I grew up with Peter Parker since the 70s and don't want to see any other person interacting with the rest of the MCU. Nothing against Miles, its just Parker has always been Spiderman to me.

Tobey Maguire

I may sound like a broken record, for that I apologize, but I'd love to see an already established Spider-Man (both actor & character) that everyone is familiar with. Bypassing high school will give us a more mature Spider-Man, confident with his abilities and battle worn enough to take on whatever is coming to him, and The Avengers.

If this was strictly a solo franchise I think I'd agree, but if they're introducing him into the MCU I think high school is the right way to go. I think a youthful spiderman adds a new dimension to the MCU that hasn't been tapped into yet. All the Marvel heroes right now are definitely older, so a younger presence is welcome in my opinion.

Akskier makes a good point. I think another thing to consider is longevity. A younger actor may be able to play the character for longer. When you take into account Tobeys age, and how many times he's played the part before, I'd be surprised if he was willing to make more than a couple of movies.

In a perfect world would we get Maguire to come back to reprise the role along with JK Simmons as well.

Very Much agreed. It definitely makes sense to have a younger actor for the longevity of the role. With the rumor of J.K. coming back, you never know but, I'm just nervous to have yet another actor play the role. Just wishful thinking I guess but, I trust Marvel :)

If Maguire was asked to come back I don't think he would, but man would not the average movie audience go nuts for that? However as much as I liked him for the role I agree with akskier they have to go young to account for where was he when the centuri arrived in New York. Spider-Man not getting involved is out of character, yet because he was just getting used to his powers while still being in High School makes sense from a timeline perspective.

Definitely agree. Even though it would be a smart move to get audiences to go nuts over the character again (fans of Maguire at least), not to say the name by itself isn't going to get butts in the seats, but just wishful thinking. Dammit I'd love to see him back.

I kinda feel like you HAVE to go with Miles Morales now.

Which would be great, and you could even get real weird by having Tobey Maguire back as Peter Parker in a mentor role.

I'm hip to Miles but I'm afraid he would require yet another origin story and I'm over any kind of Spider-Man origin movie.

In their defense, they can skip Peter Parker...

If they skip the origin story of Parker, which they *have* to as we've experienced it twice already. Then again, that could mean an origin story for Morales.

If they go Peter Parker again, Dylan has my vote, unless they decide to cast an actual teenager. Dylan looks the part more and plays confident better than Lerman, whose best acting personalities are either reserved nerd or scared rookie. Reserved nerd may be good for Peter Parker pre-Spider bite, but it's not enough for Spider-Man.

It has to be Peter Parker

No one outside comic book fans knows who Miles Morales is, and Marvel would have to establish the character for filmgoers, which would waste time. Dylan O'Brien would work, and I'd like to see Taron Egerton (KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE) in there, too.

If they make Spider-Man a little older, Josh Hutcherson would work. He was the other finalist the last time they tried to cast Spider-Man, and he has name recognition, thanks to THE HUNGER GAMES. He's a lot better actor than many people

I was thinking if they were to do the Civil War unmasking of Spider-Man as a way to reveal who's playing him, Hutcherson would be the best choice for that route as the wow factor for the reveal would be the greatest of the bunch.

On the flip side, at what point in time would the solo Spidey film take place? If he were to unmask in Civil War and they set the solo Spidey film in high school, then his unmasking would completely alter the dynamic between him and his fellow students if the film

I was really rooting for Lerman back when he was rumored along with Garfield so I think he'd be great. And no offense to Miles Morales fans but I think a lot of Spider-Man fans would feel robbed if they went that direction. But to be honest I wouldn't hate it if was Tobey Maguire. It'd be so nice to see a Spider-Man that knows his mission, his powers, and is past all the angsty teenage drama crap.
