Edward James Olmos will return as Gaff in Blade Runner 2049

"It's too bad she won't live. But then again, who does?"

Other than the obvious "tears in the rain" line, the above bit of dialogue, from Edward James Olmos' character Gaff is my favorite line from BLADE RUNNER. Haunting and beautiful in context. Just like the rest of the film.

Gaff is one of the classic examples of the cliche "there are no small parts, only small actors" as Edward James Olmos took the character of Gaff, who barely has any screen-time, let alone lines, and makes it into a character every single BLADE RUNNER fans knows just as well as Deckard, the f*cking HERO.

In a recent interview Edward James Olmos finally talked about BLADE RUNNER 2049 and confirmed Gaff will be making an appearance!

Olmos told TREND:

I signed a seven page non-disclosure contract. I did, my manager did, my agent did, everybody did. I couldn’t talk about it. I couldn’t talk about it to anybody about it. Guess what? This is the first time that I’m telling the whole world, that yes, I am going to be Gaff in Blade Runner 2049.

What his part will entail:

Well, it’s not about Gaff, but it’s about someone who is going to try to find out certain things about us back then. My role is like it was in the original – that time I only had four scenes, in this I only have one. But again, it’s a poignant little scene.

See? Gaff only had FOUR f*cking scenes in the original BLADE RUNNER, and if you are like me right now, you are thinking, there had to have been more! Gaff is all over that film! Not true. But I bet we will be saying the same thing about BLADE RUNNER 2049. How was it? It was amazing; Harrison, Ryan, and Eddie Jimmy Olmos made a great team!

Here is some history on the Gaff character, via Wikipedia, if you are interested, and I know you are:

Gaff, a mysterious character in the film, presents his compulsory invitation to Deckard in a street lingo called Cityspeak, a mixture of Spanish, French, German, Hungarian, Chinese, and Japanese. He was played by Mexican-American actor/director Edward James Olmos.

As a fellow cop, he is quickly identified as being very different from Deckard through the ways he dresses and behaves. In the commentaries the cast and crew note that he wears fancy clothing and seems to be part of the precinct's vice squad. He likes to make little Origami-figures. The last words heard in the film are spoken by him: "It's too bad she won't live. But then again, who does?"

Gaff walks with a cane and a noticeable limp.

The sequel by K. W. Jeter mentions that Gaff is killed in the line of duty. At the beginning of the novel, Bryant has just returned from the funeral and expresses his distaste for the Cityspeak written on Gaff's headstone.
