Updated: Fast and Furious series star Paul Walker has died

Dec. 1, 2013by: Alex Maidy

UPDATE 12/1/13: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal and director James Wan held a conference call this morning to discuss what the next steps will be for FAST AND FURIOUS 7. The film was on hiatus for the Thanksgiving holiday but was set to resume filming in Abu Dhabi. It is unknown how much of the film was completed before this accident or whether the release date will be changed.

R.I.P. Paul Walker (1973-2013)

In tragic news this Thanksgiving weekend, FAST AND FURIOUS 7 star Paul Walker has died in a car accident. The accident occurred in Santa Clarita, California this evening when a Porsche GT slammed into a tree and burst into flames. The cause of the accident is still unknown but both Walker and his friend, the driver, were killed. Walker was 40 years old.

Walker was currently filming FAST AND FURIOUS 7 for director James Wan. The film would mark the actor's sixth foray in the franchise. He was in Santa Clarita for a car show whose proceeds were being used to help victims of the recent typhoon in the Phillipines.  Aside from the car racing/heist series, Paul Walker was also known for the films VARSITY BLUES, PLEASANTVILLE, SHE'S ALL THAT, JOY RIDE, and RUNNING SCARED. In recent years, Walker also appeared in TAKERS, HOURS, and Clint Eastwood's FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS.

The last thing any friends, family, or fans of Paul Walker's care about is how this will affect FAST AND FURIOUS 7 which is slated for a July 11, 2014 release after the two most recent films in the series grossed huge amounts worldwide. While Vin Diesel tends to get the most attention for the films, they truly are ensemble pictures and Walker's role as Brian O'Connor is central. His relationship with Diesel on screen and friendship off has stood the test of time.

An avid fan of marine biology, Walker spent a lot of time not only working on expeditions to tag sharks, but he also has traveled the world to help in disasters like the 2010 earthquake in Chile and the Haitian earthquake the same year. Walker was also an avid car buff and worked on his own vehicles as well as often doing his own driving stunts in the various FAST AND FURIOUS films.

Walker leaves behind a daughter, Meadow and countless fans who will miss him greatly. While none of us can come close to the grief his family feels, we can do the best we can and carry his memory on by watching his films.

Photos of the accident scene have been posted on Twitter. Out of respect we will not be posting them here.

Paul Walker's management team have released the following statement on the actor's official Facebook page:

It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. - #TeamPW

Vaya con dios, Paul

I thought of him as the 2nd coming of Keanu. He had his own Point Break (the first Fast & the Furious), he had at least one movie that suprised the naysayers who ever doubted his acting ability (Running Scared); all he needed was his own Matrix. He never reached the full potential, but in time, he could have been just as majestic a figure as Keanu. He will be greatly missed.

Really Sad

I'm truly sad about this news. I really enjoyed most of his movies, especially Running Scared and the past few F&F. I always thought he seemed like a nice, cool, normal dude. An acquaintance of mine out in California had a roommate that was friends with him. She met him a few times and confirmed that he was a really nice guy. I didn't know about his heart to help people either until reading all the news about him the past few days. It sucks that a nice, generous, helpful guy gets taken so

Thoughts and prayers go out to his family, especially his daughter, and friends/castmates. I know what it's like to lose a close friend. You will be missed Paul Walker.

man...

While I will say Paul Walker was never near the top of my favorite actors list. He had the Paul Newman-ish good looks and overall did a serviceable job acting. Joyride and Running Scared are a couple of my favorite films of his, as well as a few of the Fast movies. A low key guy who apparently was an outstanding person out of the limelight. Never read about him doing drugs and punching out some cameraman. Just a guy who helped kids and loved fast cars. These things (and worse) happen to

These things (and worse) happen to ordinary people everyday, but are never given this much attention. But when something like this is showcased all over tv and the internet, it reminds you how easy things can be swept from under you whether you're famous or not. Anyhow, I feel bad for his family and friends. He'll be missed in life. P.S. James Dean, Ryan Dunn, now Paul Walker. If I was famous, I'd stay away from Porsche.

It's okay. Karma is a bitch. Perhaps when someone you love dies under tragic and horrifying circumstances and you're devastated and distraught, people will be there to insult them and make light of it. Enjoy your pathetic, small existence while you can.

Don't release any more FF movies... Its in bad taste.

This is tragic news. I just hope FF series dies as well, it with a lot of thought that I say that but it was Paul Walkers series. His death means the 7th film will never be made the way it was supposed to so it will just look bad and be a horrible last movie for this guy to be "featured" in.

I really hope they just let the series end at 6. I am a fan of the series, don't get me wrong, I just don't want this guys last film to be FF7 where the script changes and they have to CG in the poor guy

Condolences

It is so RARE to find an actor who was some sort of racer in real life (F7F), sort of diver in real life (into the blue & national geographic) & sort of stunman (doing his own stunt)...it is a GREAT LOST to world of movies...Frankly, i do love his movies even some shitty ones that couldn't do good at the cinemas like Into The Blue..He's one of an actors that i would like to meet someday but now that i know there's no more chance...

Rest In Peace Mr. Paul "Brian" Walker...God Be With You...

Very Sad

He was a solid actor ('Running Scared' contains my favorite performance of his) and seemed like a cool guy in real life; able to stay out of the tabloids couldn't have been easy. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

A very sad loss

I didn't know how well-regarded and a stand up guy Paul Walker was until his death, as he managed to stay out of tabloids and news during his career. He chose the right roles for his career and acting style, never contending for an Oscar, but always getting the job done. Hollywood seems to have lost a humble laidback gentleman, which you don't come across too often. RIP.

Wow

The idea and reality of celebrity is so crazy. I very much enjoyed the first and last two Fast films. I've actually enjoyed all the films to a degree. I've prolly seen most of his films, and he's not a great actor, but it's crazy how bad you can feel towards the death of someone you never knew. On top of that, the pain he must have felt. I know ppl died every day, majority of them never had the luxery he got, but it still makes me feel like I know him. It's just so weird how you can develop

Why is it some celebrity deaths feel like a solid punch in the stomach? Never knew him, enjoyed him in movies, yet every time I think about this I feel so goddam sad and cannot explain why. Whatever the case, way too soon to go, RIP.

I usually never respond to fellow Shmoes incessantly ignorant comments, but if you're referencing Heath Ledger's posthumous Oscar win then you are terribly wrong. I do not disagree that politics might have played a part and were involved but he deserved that Oscar none the less. It it is truly not fair to compare the two. You should be ashamed.

They head down the runway, the gang waves goodbye, they'll be in touch, fade. Then the rest of the film goes on with the remaining members of the group. It just seems too sad to kill the Brian character off after the actor dies in real life. I know some shows and films have done it before, Dallas and 8 Simple Rules come to mind, but a franchise like this needs to go with the positive side of a character this important and write him out right. Please.

Tragic. He wasn't my favorite but I enjoyed his movies. I'm surprised that I see so many douchebags on this message board. WTF is wrong with you? He's an actor. of course its going to get coverage. People escape through movies and when someone follows an actors career, and that actor dies, it can be hard for some people, even if they didn't know them personally. If you don't like his movies or plan on posting something that brings nothing to the conversation, move to the next article or go post

Selective memory much? There were absolutely death claims about Ben Affleck upon the news of his casting as Batman so don't call it a fictional circumstance. He and his friend shouldn't have been driving like dicks... If he had struck a kid would we all be eulogizing him in the same way? I'm sorry you guys think name calling is the way to 'correct' me But that only proves the aggression people here really hold.

You just traded one hypothetical situation for another. Paul Walker didn't strike any kids, so that has no place in this. He was, however, active in charity and gave his time and money to others who have less. Why is it wrong for people to express disappointment over his death?

And death threats aren't the same as actually rejoicing in death. Those came from some people who take comic book movies way too seriously. If Ben Affleck actually died, there would likely be many people mourning

Incredibly sad.

So sad to lose such a spirited actor. Anyone who has seen Running Scared knows he had more to offer than just being a Fast and Furious player.

Really sad news.
Underrated actor, good person apparently, a joy to interview...
So, I know people die every day, but it's ok to be saddened about a 'stranger's' death, nonetheless.
Ho, and please, people: HE WASN'T THE DRIVER... So stop writing like he was ! Or worst, like he was responsible for the accident, somehow...

Be a little decent.

I'm encouraged to see that most of those who have posted here have expressed their sadness and feelings of loss in such a decent and respectful manner. With that said, I'm horrified to see that a small number of people have felt the need post some terrible comments that would only cause hurt to the families of those who died. In the future, before writing these things, you should ask yourself, how would you like people to respond to the death of one of your family members.

Almost as if it was seeing an old friend who comes and goes and even if you don't see each other for a while, you pick up where you left off when you see

I can say without a shadow of a doubt this one and Brandon Lee really hurts, but all the while I appreciate what I have around me even more...

Hey, wolverinerpt,
I'm terribly sorry for your loss. Hope I didn't dig up any bad memories. But yes, I totally agree with you. Life is one big movie and certain movies/songs are like bookmarks of certain dates or events in my life. With Fast & Furious, I really feel attach to the movie. Partly because main stars of the movies are still with the franchise reprising their roles. And yes, I never felt this shocked about celebrity's death since that fatal accident that took Brandon Lee's life.

2 Fast, 2 Furious

I'm sure in a town as notoriously cold blooded as Hollywood, the big wigs at Universal are scrambling to see if they can save FAST 7.
Alas, Mr. Walker is not the only one who died today... his franchise about dangerous, high-speed automobile capers is certainly not going to seem anything but insensitive at this or any other juncture moving forward, and will likely be laid to rest as well.
And that sucks for people hoping for one last adrenaline rush from Walker and Diesel. Such a good dude,

I always liked Paul Walker he was a joy to watch in every film, even if that film stunk. I think he was underrated as an actor, and he will be sorely missed. Why is it that the good ones in Hollywood are taken early from us, and the trash seem to live on forever?

Honestly when an actor dies I do wonder how it affects their last movies. Making movies is an actors passion, a big piece of who they are just like any artist. Whenever one dies I always hope their last film is as complete as possible so I can go into the theater, give my applause at the end and bid them a fond farewell just like Heath and TDK

Fucking Porsche's...

First James Dean (thanks dseal22), Ryan Dunn, now Paul Walker... I'm not joking when I say those thinly sheeted speedsters are eventual death traps if you're a lead foot. I know of a family friend who met a nearly identical fate about twenty years ago, behind the wheel of his own Porsche. Just because you drive a sports car doesn't mean you should drive like the car is part of your sport... RIP
