Fifteen roles we are lucky didn't star Nicolas Cage

Apr. 9, 2012by: Alex Maidy

I like Nicolas Cage, I really do. I love THE ROCK, FACE/OFF, and CON AIR. ADAPTATION is great and BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS is just insane fun. But, the dude will do anything for a paycheck. We have all seen these bad films. it makes you wonder what the man will not do in the name of the almight dollar (or to pay the IRS).

Well, what about the movies that he didn't end up starring in?

Lons at Ranker.com has compiled a very nice list of the fifteen movies that Nicolas Cage was going to star in or was being considered for. Each movie has a reference as to where Cage was in the running for the role. It is absolutely mindboggling to me that he was almost Willy Wonka, Superman, or Aragorn. All three of those roles would have sunk the movies as a whole. But, Neo, Skeletor, and Francis Dolarhyde would have been interesting choices.

Here is the Top 10 from the Ranker list (along with the star who actually got the role):

1) Superman - SUPERMAN RETURNS (Brandon Routh)

2) Aragorn - THE LORD OF THE RINGS (Viggo Mortensen)

3) Neo - THE MATRIX (Keanu Reeves)

4) Willy Wonka - CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (Johnny Depp)

5) Chev Chelios - CRANK (Jason Statham)

6) The Scarecrow - BATMAN (Cillian Murphy)

7) Randy "The Ram" Robinson -THE WRESTLER (Mickey Rourke)

8) Harry Dunne - DUMB AND DUMBER (Jeff Daniels)

9) John Bender - THE BREAKFAST CLUB (Judd Nelson)

10) John Constantine - CONSTANTINE (Keanu Reeves)

We may never know what would have happened in an alternate universe if those movies had been made. All we can do is watch this video below and let the fact soak in that these movies did, in fact, star Nicolas Cage.

Extra Tidbit: THE WICKER MAN remake.....what a horrible, horrible idea.

i think he would have done fine with Constantine. It was a good movie but Reeves played it flat and Cage can do that all night long.

Most of those roles I could picture other actors in, and none would have bothered me that Cage did instead, except maybe the wrestler

I'd LOVE to see what he'd have done w/ John Bender and Willy Wonka. But Aragorn??? What . . in . . the . . . ???

Seems odd to think Cage was ever considered for The Wrestler, but part of me thinks he could've been amazing as Willy Wonka.

I totally wouldn't have minded Nicolas Cage as Crank, that movie would have been (no pun intended) KICK-Ass!

And also Constantine, though it would teeter on unintentional comedy territory would have been ok, because when I first watched it I couldn't help but picture Nic Cage in the role.

Cage would have been fine in most of those. I couldn't see him pulling off Dumb and Dumber though. It's easy to forget that he can act. He just picks bad projects.

Honestly, Cage would have been a GREAT Scarecrow. Too bad that never happened.

It'd be frakkin' weird and awesome to see Cage as Chev from Crank.

He was also considered to play Green Goblin. Willem Dafoe owned that role, but I would've loved to see Nicolas Cage wearing a goblin costume battling Spider-Man while laughing maniacally.

Statham was right for Chelios...

But Nic Cage wasn't the only other guy they were considering, they were also looking at:
Chris Rock
Matt Dillon
Johnny Knoxville
Seann William Scott
Robert Downey, Jr.
Andy Serkis

I actually wouldn't mind seeing versions of all those movies with Nicolas Cage in them. I think they'd be awesome.

Are you kidding me? Nic Cage as Chev Chelios would have elevated Crank into cult classic heaven. Cage as Willy Wonka would've been equally as awesome, at least it wouldn't have turned out such a bland studio project. And at least Superman would have been entertaining in a crash and burn kind of way instead of just mildly forgettable the way Superman Returns was.

Dumb and Dumber is a classic and I wouldn't change anything about it - but still, I would love to see the alternate universe

Dumb and Dumber is a classic and I wouldn't change anything about it - but still, I would love to see the alternate universe version with Cage playing an idiot - I imagine it would top the brilliance of Cage in Wicker Man.

Also, in my alternate (perfect) universe, there is a movie featuring a Schwarzenegger/Cage line-up.

The wickerman is....

the greatest comedy worst film ever made. It's just cage screaming and punching women what is not to like LMFAO.
