First Official Look at Tim Burton's Dark Shadows

09.22.2011

We've seen a few spy shots of Johnny Depp on the set of DARK SHADOWS that look like Willy Wonka and the Mad Hatter had a baby, but now we're getting our first official look at the project courtesy of EW.

The image above is a collection of the full cast of the vampire flick, a remake of '70s TV series. The roster includes (from left to right) Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman; Chloe Grace Moretz as Carolyn Stoddard; Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard; Gulliver McGrath as David Collins; Bella Heathcote as Vitoria Winters; Johnny Depp as Barnabas; Ray Shirley as Mrs. Johnson; Jackie Earle Haley as Willie Loomis; Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins; and Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard.

Click to enlarge the picture, and below you can find a rather lengthy plot synopsis to give you an idea what the story of DARK SHADOWS is all about.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Brouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Extra Tidbit: I hope it's good, but I'm tired of vampires, and tired of lackluster Burton/Depp goth collaborations, so the odds are stacked against it.

I'm not ashamed...

I am a Tim Burton fan(most of the time), as well as a Johnny Depp fan(almost all of the time). I think it will be awesome like the majority of Burton and Depp's films.

That's what I'm talkin' bout!

Good to see that earlier photo of Johnny Depp was just a premature tease. The look of the entire cast here is pitch perfect and I love how this plot synopsis uses crucial story elements from the series. Cannot wait!

Pfeiffer is so sexy, I don't give a shit how old she is. But come on Burton, must you cast your wacky wife in EVERYTHING you do??

They should seriously have re-released the 1990's series again. Ben Cross ROCKED THE SHIT out of Barnabas Collins.

Wow. Depp looks like he rides the short bus to school (Do they really want to copy the Frid look? Really?), Helena looks like a sketch of Gerald Scarfe's for THE WALL that he threw away because it was "too much", Haley looks like he's an extra from one of the REVENGE OF THE NERDS sequels, and Michelle looks like they propped her up post-stroke. Ah, another steamy pile of Burton shit just waiting to be adored by the goth/emo/hipster set and maligned by fans of good filmmaking.

Looks good

My only quibble is that Pfeifer really should be a brunette to giver that gothic widow feel.
Blonde hair just makes her look too young.

meh.... this really needs to be serialized

as it was before....good movies based on TV shows (Addams Family)leave the viewer wanting a continuation, ...not good for even a decent 2 hour flick based on a long running Soap opera. Still... give me a trailer and then we'll talk again... till then I'm down with Killer Elite!

I know its the cool thing to hate on Burton now, but I still enjoy all his films to some extent. Alice was a bit disappointing, but there's a lot worse that gets released. His early films were better, but just b/c his more recent films aren't the same level of greatness they aren't bad movies. It's the same when people complain about the new films of Spielberg, Scorsese, Ridley Scott, etc.

I pretty much feel the same way, I just wish he would go back to original material instead of remakes and retreads. Maybe he doesn't have any new material and that's OK too but nothing he has done, with the exception of Sweeney Todd IMO, really holds up to the promise he had in the 80's.

I dismissed this after seeing Johnny Depp in the set photo but this photo redeemed it. He doesn't look nearly as bad in this picture as he did in the set photo, and the look of the rest of the cast looks good.

Maybe this will be more like Sleepy Hallow meets Adams Family instead of Alice in Wonderland or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I agree with the extra tidbit. Burton hasn't directed a good film in over ten years. Somehow he's manage to become a hack of his own work. I wish he would just disappear for a few years and get out of these commercialized products.

Sweeney Todd was paint by numbers after the brodway show, and Big Fish is a hallmark movie with circus scenes in it, besides, albert finney played an obnoxious edward bloom.

This looks like it could be a bit of a return to form for Burton. He's amassed a bunch of actors who look appropriately unique and colorful. For a moment I thought Jonny Lee Miller was Danny Huston.
