Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm on Mars and left behind by his crew, where he must draw upon his ingenuity and wit in order to survive. Enter Ridley Scott and Matt Damon in a film that's APOLLO 13 meets CAST AWAY. For those of you who read the book, you know it's just as entertaining as it sounds! Here's a few images of our hero(es) on Mars, as well as some pretty cool retro art for Total Film covers.

Pretty much everyone I know couldn't shut up about Andy Weir's book, and I was delighted to find it one of the best reads in a long time. I'd urge anyone who enjoys the written word to pick it up when they get the chance, although it looks like Ridley Scott will do it justice judging from the trailer below. In case you're looking to get more of a behind-the-scenes fix, you can head here and read up on our set-visit of THE MARTIAN. In meantime, we have 2 more months to see if Mark Watney has any shot of surviving on the red planet. See you at the party, Watney!

THE MARTIAN opens on October 2, 2015.

I'm just sad they didn't get a better lead....

I had Jason Bourne as a scientist/astronaut and it was so laughably bad that it ruined Interstellar for me. The guy is a mental lightweight (anyone remember him saying he'd give George Bush a million dollars to quit?) and comes from the Kevin Costner school of acting (i.e. one-dimensional). He's so awful at action that the Bourne series had to become an epileptic's worst nightmare just to shoot the fight scenes. I can't buy him as a genius scientist, and he's barely more tolerable as an

It will make a Redbox rental (at best) for me.

Matt Damon is a horrible actor. His politics make his performances wholly unbelievable because they destroy any suspension of disbelief.

Damon could never be an astronaut because he'd be sitting on the ground waiting for some government program to help him tie his shoes before he ever left his mansion.

Matt Damon

I've said it before and ill say it again, Matt Damon is the most reliable actor working today (and Christian Bale). Theirs no one I would trust more to deliver a 1 man show like this.

When you say "reliable," I think you meant "lack of versatility."

Seriously, I can't remember a movie he didn't play Matt Damon in (although I liked him in Team America).

That first image somehow reminds me of the iconic ending of the original Planet of the Apes.

Throw in a monkey and you've got a film called 'Robinson Crusoe on Mars' which is quite good.
