Guy Ritchie replacing Zack Snyder for 300 prequel Xerxes? Superman problems? Plus Sherlock 2 gets a title

02.15.2011

Last summer, comic creator Frank Miller announced XERXES, his prequel to the graphic novel 300. Soon after, that movie adaptation's director Zack Snyder officially came on board to bring Miller's work to bloody life again. At least on the page -- Snyder only signed to worked on the script.

And now it sounds like the studio is seeking a Snyder substitute behind the camera. Vulture claims that Warner Bros. wants Guy Ritchie (SNATCH, SHERLOCK HOLMES) to take over the sweeping tale of gods and warriors.

Vulture offers nothing but speculation as to the possible reasons for replacing Snyder on the project -- e.g., the director's impending movie SUCKER PUNCH is an expensive mess, his WATCHMEN and LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS under-performed, and Snyder will be too preoccupied trying to fix some major problems with his next anticipated project, SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL.

Again, those are all just theories... but that last bit may cause panic for fans of Christopher Nolan, who is producing and co-wrote the script for the new SUPERMAN. But we've already learned that Nolan won't be a "hands on" producer on Snyder's Kryptonian because he's gearing up for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES -- his producer-spouse Emma Thomas said that Nolan brought SUPERMAN to an appropriate screenplay and it's now entirely Snyder's picture.

Meanwhile, Ritchie is in the midst of his SHERLOCK HOLMES sequel, which Coming Soon verified as being titled SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS. That movie's due in December, and Ritchie hasn't committed to another project yet.

As for XERXES, Miller previously had this to say about the story: "The time frame begins 10 years before '300' and the story starts with the Battle of Marathon, which was killer to draw, by the way, even if it was a lot of work. The lead character is Themistocles who became warlord of Greece and built their navy. The story is very different than '300' in that it involves Xerxes search for godhood. The existence of gods are presupposed in this story and the idea is that he well on his way to godhood by the end of the story. With Themistocles I have a character who is almost the dead opposite of Leonidas in that Themistocles was a lying, conniving, brilliant, heroic figure. He was nicknamed 'The Subtle Serpent' and he always manages to do the exact right things that will result in him benefiting greatly."

I would rather not see Xerxes at all.

Why would they have a brilliant director like Ritchie waste his time on a fucking film where everything is gonna CGI'd into anyway?

SNYDER

Snyder has never made a bad movie... As for his status as a 'visionary,' who cares? His Dawn 2004 remake was fresh and creative, his 300 was visually breathtaking, and his Watchmen adaptation was extremely faithful (because everybody knew it needed to be)... why all the hate?

Anyone notice that Frank Miller lost his mind years ago? Seriously, this isn't the same guy that delivered The Dark Knight Returns or Elektra. Tapping him to write anything nowadays is a very bad idea.

Indifferent

Honestly, couldn't care less at this point, who makes the movie or if it even gets made. Now I am in no way a Snyder fanboy, but what is with all the hate? When it came out 300 was epic (admit it!), Watchmen was beautifully crafted, the only reason it under-performed is that people expected a Super Hero action movie with no real concept of what the story was truly about. Also, am I missing something about Sucker Punch? When I saw the trailer I thought it looked amazing, and I haven't heard

Help me understand.

you are on point! 300 was a visual experience that we rarely see. Watchmen was brilliant and adapted the material well and Sucker Punch looks cool. What the hell else do these guys want?

Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows...they should drop the 'A'., otherwise, i dig it. It's better than 'SH2'.

Zack Snyder is completely overrated. Yes 300 was entertaining, but mosty due to Frank Miller's source material. I can't stand how he is touted as "visionary director" all he has done is adapt other peoples creativity. Let's do something original that does not involve slow motion. I am very worried about Superman.

If he adapts others works and does it well why wouldnt he adapt superman well? Watchmen and 300 were almost exactly the source material - I dont see anyone else (but RR Sin City) doing that! I am worried about the studio's involvement on superman, not zack.

If Snyder doens't do it, fuck it! His style was what made 300 great, and I'm sure this will have an equally paper thin story.. so unless the visuals wow us, this is shit about to hit the fan!

Snyder, no question about it. I don't know why people whine about his films. The man is a visual genius. Watchmen was a faithful adaptation although a lil' dry, Guardians was amazing, and Sucker Punch looks incredible. Guy Ritchie is good, but in no way does his visual style match Snyders. Trust me, a Xerxes movie without Snyder's visuals will probably suck a lot.

SUPERMAN...

is a major tentpole franchise film that will most likely keep Snyder busy for the next couple years with sequels and what not. It just sounds to me like he choose Superman as his top priority over a 300 sequel, which is the right choice IMO as I don't think there really even needs to be another 300 movie. I enjoy the first, but do we really need another one that badly? C'mon Frank, start workin' on Sin City 2 please, thats the sequel we really want to see. Hopefully, if WB proceeds with plans

For the love of God, let the new Superman movie be awesome. I don't know if us fans can take another sub-par Superman movie. Sure, Snyder's last two movies may have underperformed because Watchmen was a little too far out there for people, except for us comic book fans and his animated Owl movie was no Toy Story or Despicable Me.

If everything goes well with Superman: Man of Steel, then the movie will do great at the Box Office. And finally we will have the balls to the wall action Superman

300 was a neat movie, only saw it once and dont plan on seeing it again. This movie seems pointless and no one is interested for it.

Should be Snyder's

Can't they just put it on hiatus till Snyder finishes "Superman?" I mean... "Sin City 2" STILL hasn't come out yet and that is a Frank Miller-property.

Oh for fucks sake. Is Guy Ritchie the new Guillermo Del Toro in that his name will be attached to every movie that's coming out now?

Not saying that Ritchie directing a project like this is bad, but between Lobo, Holmes, RocknRolla, Gamekeeper, Cannonball Run, Excalibur, and who knows what else, his name sure seems to be attached to a lot of things he'll never get around to actually doing.

Sorry, I thought it was obvious that I was referring to the planned sequels. I've seen RocknRolla and thought it was fantastic. I also meant future Holmes sequels when I wrote Holmes.
