Have we learned nothing? Clash of the Titans 2 to be converted to 3D

02.24.2011

CLASH OF THE TITANS is widely sourced as launching the backlash against the modern era of 3D. The 3D post-conversion was so poorly done even James Cameron couldn't help but bash it. But despite the misgivings audiences had about the original film, Warner Bros. looks set to repeat history and use the conversion process again for the upcoming CLASH sequel, WRATH OF THE TITANS.

Jonathan Liebesman, who will be directing the sequel, explains the move to Cinematical. "I think what you have to remember is the first film was neither shot nor edited with 3D in mind. It was shot as a 2D movie and edited as a 2D film, and they decided to convert it with six or seven weeks to go until release, which is insane; the technology was not there. That's why we're conceiving it from the start, from the ground up, in 3D, editing in 3D for 3D."

Guess what? I heard that same line of nonsense about the GREEN HORNET convert and it's not like the 3D effects in that film were any better. That was as needless a 3D conversion as you'll ever find.

So why not go the DRIVE ANGRY route and shoot the film in 3D? Liebesman says, "I just feel like I have to shoot on film; I don't know, it just has that texture." And to his credit, Liebesman says he didn't want to convert the film to 3D but Warner Bros. forced his hand and was able to convince him by showing him how far conversions have come. (So far that the same studio canceled a planned conversion of HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS because it looked like crap.)

What do you think? Do you think they can improve the 3D look for the sequel or is this already putting a bad taste in your mouth?

I think 3D's gimmick effect is starting to wear off on audiences. People have seen it poorly implemented enough times to stop thinking the words "3D"=awesome. So, by time this comes out, if its 3D is shite, it'll probably completely tank with poor word of mouth. or at least you'd hope so.

A terrible movie made worse by the 3D transfer.

I'm sure this will suck like the last one did. However from the studios standpoint, they are bound to make more money because they are going to put it in 3D. In fact someday they are going to point to "Clash of Titans" as the way 3D shouldn't look. I'm still not convinced that 3D will even be around in decade. Until they start making them all look like "Avatar," I could care less if it's 3D. Especially because you have to wear the ridiculous glasses & most 3D films are complete Sh*t. See

The first movie had awful editing, a weak stroy, and one dimensional characters. Adding a third dimension, filmed or converted, isn't going to matter if the other problems aren't fixed first.

3D wil always be nothing more than a gimmick & to me is a step back not forward in filmmaking, just because one movie Avatar did it the right way doesn't mean every movie has to, and now it has became nothing more than an excuse to make more money due to the higher admission.

I'm ready for this phase to be over

Every 10 to 20 years, 3D makes a "big comeback" and everyone says "it's the future of film making."

I, for one, am ready to see the door smack 3D on its ass on its way out.

Why not just SHOOT it in 3D? Contrary to fanboy bitching, 3D films still bring in dough, and GA eats them up.

Piranha 3D proves that with time and effort, converting films into 3D can sometimes be as good as shooting in 3D. I was impressed with the 3D effects in that film. As for CotT2, I don't give a shit.

Epic fail! This is one of the reasons why some movie directors and veteran actors retire for good from the movie business example: Kevin Smith, Steven Soderbergh.

Yeah that's dumb

If they're approaching it with 3D in mind, remove the pressure in the end of coordinating the conversion process and shoot 3d up front. But it's most likely the director is not comfortable working with a 3d camera.

I'm so sick and tired of these post-converted 3D films. But the studios are making more money than ever and that's due to the hiked up ticket prices for 3D films

So unfortunately 3D films will be around for a long long time...

Converting to 3D is cheaper, and it is very lucrative; since people go see 3D regardless if it has been filmed in 3D or converted.

Perhaps we need a symbol for "Real 3d" and "Converted 3d", that some government institution, or similar, demands being on all posters for all 3d-films.

WTF. How do you even begin to comment on something like this?

I sort of get WB's decision that they want 3D on this. 3D can be both usable and profitable if done correctly, and this supposed franchise could be a reasonably fun 3D endeavor. Perhaps they will be able to pull off the conversion in post and produce a reasonably well made 3D movie. The problem is, if you are going to do it, and you have the time and resources available, then why not just do it correctly from the get

Perhaps they will be able to pull off the conversion in post and produce a reasonably well made 3D movie. The problem is, if you are going to do it, and you have the time and resources available, then why not just do it correctly from the get go?

After the 3D backlash that the first Clash brought, you would think WB would be very careful with the ground they are treading to do the sequel right this time. Certainly the 3D was not the only problem with the first movie. The fact that it is just a shitty movie doesn't help anything. Why start off on the sequel by repeating the same mistakes?

From the article it sounds like WB was not opposed to using Cameron's 3D camera tech, but instead the director is just being a bull-headed ass by refusing to use it. Here's a thought: Jonathan Liebesman (whoever the fuck he is) is probably not the right director for this movie. If he is unwilling to do the movie correctly, then show his ass the door. The comment of just preferring the texture of film is ridiculous, in the context of a film like this. If that is truly how he feels, then he should not be directing this movie. Hire someone who knows how to use 3D cameras, or at the very least has an enthusiasm to go meet with Cameron and learn how to use them. If Liebesman prefers film, then he should seek out jobs directing movies that probably don't have a tendency towards digital effects and 3D experiences. On the other side of that coin, we don't see someone like Michael Bay chomping at the bit to direct the next Julia Roberts film for a similar set of reasoning.

Sure, Resident Evil Afterlife was crap as a movie, but at least Paul Anderson had the sense to want to do the 3D correctly, and learn how to use the technology rather than just lazily writing it off. Does his upcoming 3 Musketeers movie need to be in 3D? Of course not, but at least he wants to do it right, regardless of necessity.

The bottom line is that this is NOT a good situation for WB to be starting this on. They have a lot of respect to earn from audiences based on the shit that was produced from the first movie. Starting off by hiring some hack who is refusing to do the movie correctly before anything has even started yet, is not how things should be done.

Cash for the titans

I never seen the first one. 3-D or not it looked dumb as shit. This will be no better, I'm sure. All the fools who thought the movie looked great, went and realized how disposable it was are probably going to go back and waste more of their money.

So, green bar for the studio who keeps winning your money and obedience. If people are dumb enough to waste their time and money on it then so be it. Who am I to judge? I'm just another fool moaning online. But at least I won't be there. I won't

the 3d absolute junk, so was the film editing on the whole. Poor Danny Huston, did we see him at all? Hope the script is better.

What did you expect? Hollywood is a business first and foremost. If they can find any "excuse" to over-charge us 5 dollars, by golly they will!

I hate 3D post conversion, it's such a waste of time, and money, considering it won't get me (the movie goer who attends less movies than the average movie goer) into the the theater to make that extra five bucks per person

Green Hornet's 3D wasn't that bad. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, it could've been better, but it is possible with time and effort.

Not a good idea. That was the biggest problem people had with the original. They should just do this movie in regular 2D.

I remember when 3D was such a cool, fun rarity. Now it's just the complete opposite.

Noooooo

Whilst it looks like the 3D craze will continue (not necessarily a bad thing as I have enjoyed films SHOT in this format), I am getting fed up with these movies that are doing it for the sake of it. Green Hornet certainly did not benefit from 3D and I'm pissed off that when I finally get around to seeing these movies Clash 1 and Green Hornet in particular, my local cinema does not give me the option to watch in 2D. I enjoyed both movies but did not enjoy the pointless conversion...
