Get your first look with a colorful cover and photos for Thor: Ragnarok

Nooooooooo! Say it ain't so, Thor! I thought that you and I were in on this long, blonde hair thing together, man! I feel so … betrayed. Ah well, I suppose even the God of Thunder needs a makeover every now and again. Still, I've got to ask, do you have anything to say for yourself? "It was nice not to have to sit in the makeup chair for that hour each morning. It felt like a rebirth for me as the actor but also as the character," says Hemsworth. Eh, I suppose that will have to do.

Today, we've got our first look at Chris Hemsworth's GQ Thor, Cate Blanchett's Hela, and Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, each standing tall on the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly (on stands Friday). I must say, as someone quite familiar with all three of these characters from the pages of Marvel's Thor: God of Thunder and Journey Into Mystery, these cinematic versions are a slight departure from the source material. That said, they're still looking real good, don't you think? I can't wait to see Hela's wicked headgear in the film, as well as Valkyrie carve her way through a series of minions and demi-gods alongside characters like Sif and Volstagg.

In regard to the film's plot, THOR: RAGNAROK looks to have a lot going on for it. In addition to battling Hela, the Goddess of Death, the Odison will also go toe-to-toe with the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), when they find themselves wandering the remote of Sakaar. In talking about her role as Hela, Blanchett offered these comments to EW, "She’s been locked away for millennia getting more and more cross, and then, with a mistake, she gets unleashed and she ain’t getting back in that box." As part of Hela's attack on Thor, the hammer-wielding god is sent to Sakaar, where he is forced into gladiatorial combat with others who posses incredible strength and powers.

In remarking about the nature of Sakaar, Hemsworth stated, "Sakaar is basically where every wormhole across the universe dumps out its trash, so you get people from all walks of life with all sorts of incredible abilities and powers. No one cares what prince or king Thor may have been in another world. Also, his strength is pretty easily matched with those he finds himself amongst." Furthermore, the Australian actor also commented on the tone of the film, saying, "Taika has such a quirky, left-of-field sense of humor, which forced all the characters and the tone of the whole story to head in a new direction. Each day we were like, ‘Are we pushing it too far? Are we allowed to have this much fun?" 

Adding to Hemsworth's remarks was the film's director Taika Waititi (WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS) who commented, "I think sometimes people mistake a tonal shift as ‘We’re just going to make some ridiculous broad comedy where no one gives a s— what happens and everyone gets stoned and sits around talking about saving the universe. We want people to care what happens and care that the hero succeeds. I think tonally it’s like a slight shift. I don’t feel nervous — I feel good about it."

This all sounds pretty fantastic to me! THOR is still sitting mighty high on my list of favorite Marvel films, and if THOR: RAGNAROK looks to return to the comedic tonality of that first release, I'm down for that.
