Hulu Plus adds Criterion Collection films to its lineup

02.15.2011

If you're a movie buff you know and love The Criterion Collection. They have released some of the best Laserdiscs, DVDs and Blu-ray of some of the best films in history. And now it'll get a little easier to watch some of those classics as Criterion officially joins Hulu to stream some of the films in their library.

The catch is that you'll have to subscribe to Hulu Plus at a cost of $7.99/month. The films will be presented in HD and you can watch them on your computer, iPad or (if you have the hook-up) on your TV. But what they'll be missing are some of the classic Criterion special features which are, to me, one of the big selling points of the discs.

Right now there are about 150 films available in the library with Criterion and Hulu promising to add more. For now, you can start with films like DIABOLIQUE, 400 BLOWS, CRONOS, RASHOMON, M and MODERN TIMES to get yourself started. You won't find a lot of the modern, pop culture-y Criterion films like ANTICHRIST, BENJAMIN BUTTON, CHASING AMY, THE ROCK or DAZED AND CONFUSED but you probably own most of those DVDs anyway. This, if you're so inclined, is a good way to experience some films you may not have seen or have not seen in a very long time.

For the latest from Criterion, make sure to stay tuned to The Digital Dorm for all the latest Criterion reviews.

I've been on Hulu for about 3 years now. I don't have cable so the site is where I watch most of my shows. They're really good at having new tv shows available, like Undercovers, Fringe, Community, Parks And Recreation, Chuck, etc. They even have the longer running shows like Psych, Lost, American Dad, Family Guy, etc. If it had not been for Hulu I wouldn't have watched half the shows I just name. I hadn't even seen Lost or Psych until last year, which I was able to watch from the beginning.

But now they're asking for 7.99/month. That isn't bad, but I was there when it was all free. I'm willing to pay because I know it will help keep some of the currently running shows, on Hulu longer. (They have to constantly delete a lot of episodes for some reason... maybe to make room?) But as long as they don't charge more in the future, I am willing to pay for the premium part of Hulu.
