Idris Elba might battle giant monsters in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim

Many of us who’ve seen Idris Elba as a supporting player in stuff like ROCKnROLLA, THOR, AMERICAN GANGSTER and (of course) HBO’s “The Wire” have wondered when we’d get to see him do something much bigger.

Things don’t get much bigger than PACIFIC RIM, Guillermo del Toro’s movie about giant robots battling gargantuan monsters.

Elba is reportedly now being pursued for the big-budget action/sci-fi project, which involves mega-sized creatures that emerge from an underwater dimensional hole in the Pacific. Several affected countries team up to combat the threat with huge mechanized units, each of which require a pair of specially trained pilots.

“Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam is playing one of the robot drivers, and Tom Cruise has also expressed interest in helping beat the beasts.

Elba has also been rumored for the title role in Quentin Tarantino’s slave epic DJANGO UNCHAINED after he recently tweeted “Having one of the biggest meetings of my professional life today…meeting a very controversial director for a very controversial part.”

In a perfect world, we’d get him in both movies… First, we’ll see him in Ridley Scott’s ALIEN maybe-prequel PROMETHEUS and the superfluous sequel GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE.
