Jackie Chan is Miyagi

01.13.2009

Jackie Chan knows that a man who can catch a paycheck with chopsticks can accomplish anything... or at least the repackaging of your memories for financial gain.

The legendary martial actor will be mentoring a new childlike companion (no, not Chris Tucker), playing the wise Mr. Miyagi in a remake of THE KARATE KID. His student this time will be Will Smith's precocious offspring Jaden Smith. The movie will, of course, "examine the relationship between an older martial-arts expert and a young boy who is picked on by bullies".

The crane-kicking and leg-sweeping will be directed this time by Harald Zwart (THE PINK PANTHER 2, AGENT CODY BANKS), and will presumably not feature any appearances by Ralph Macchio, Elisabeth Shue, Martin Kove, William Zabka, or the vengeful spirit of Pat Morita. But it should.

Extra Tidbit: Show me... sand da fraw.

OH Bother

The original was a classic. Plus no one can replace the original Miyagi. Jackie Chan should avoid this deal and stick back to his old school. Is it me or does Will Smith's kid sound like a spoiled brat

Whaaa...?

What the hell?

Beijing is the setting for 'KARATE' Kid?

Jackie Chan is portraying Mr. Miyagi????

Why don't they just rename the film, 'Kung-fu Kid' and have Chan play...well...'Mr. Chan' or 'Mr. Mou'...?

That's just like casting Chinese actors/actresses for a geisha film in Japan...(Oh, wait).

:-)

Hmmm, I don't know about this film...

I could give two shits about this. Sure, Chan...why not? I'm as likely to ever see this as I am to see the new witch mountain movie.

yikes

Why can´t they just actually go to Japan and see if someone there could get the job done? Seriously, whenever a movie calls for the asian guy they call Chan then Jet Li and then they are like, who else can we call. This is a bad idea.

Karate is Japanese. Jackie Chan is Chinese. Another Hollywood case of "all Asians look alike". Please Stop.

If I wanted to watch martial arts done to a poor story and aimed at 7-yr. olds, I'll watch power rangers.

Ugh

Can you say no originality? Looks like Will Smith is going to really kill Jackie Chan's career.

THIS IDEA IS FUCKING STUPID!

Dont do it! Chan doesnt have the acting chops it takes to portray Mr. Miyagi! Ill never buy him as Mr. Miyagi! He is too goofy and Mr. Miyagi was never about being goofy!

Cancel this project!

C'mon . . . do you REALLY give a shit?

I loved the Karate Kid when I was younger; however, when I watch it now, I get depressed. It really isn't all that good of a movie. I mean, c'mon, who really watches this movie religiously, as if it's in their top ten movies of all time? (That's what I thought.)

As far as my experience goes with "nostalgic" movies, they seem to gain momentum over the years as being the greatest movies I've ever experienced in my life simply because I connected with them at a young age. It isn't until I

As far as my experience goes with "nostalgic" movies, they seem to gain momentum over the years as being the greatest movies I've ever experienced in my life simply because I connected with them at a young age. It isn't until I go back and watch them later that I realize how ignorant I was as a kid (there are a few exceptions to this). If I had the knowledge of movies back then that I do today, I would have blasted that movie.

Be honest, wouldn’t you?

Talk about raping your childhood . . . Here’s the epitome of having your childhood raped (figuratively, definitely not literally)—going back to watch movies that you loved as a kid, only to realize how shitty they were.

Bottom line . . . Hollywood is trying (and probably will succeed) to cash in on a simple concept directed to a certain demographic. What is old to us is going to be brand new for someone else. We have a choice whether to watch this film or not . . . I certainly will not.

Karate?

The Kung-Fu Kid?

Sounds like a really bad 80s flick that tried to combine a western and martial arts.

Damm people, relax!!

Jackie Chan may not make the best American movies but they are entertaining. And Jaden did well in Pursuit of Happiness. Don't make this out to be anymore than what it probably will be. A decent movie with a couple of entertaining fight scenes and a fair amount of comic relief. Seriously, the first KK wasn't that good, especially when watched now. And one more thing. Hollywood has been doing remakes and reboots (just a pretty new term) for many decades now. It isn't like it's new. So stop

Just don't expect it to be a fukkin masterpiece and things will work out.

im just entertained at the thought of the scene where mr. miyagi saves danny's and kicks the bullies asses. interesting to see if jackie would do it up like one of his awesome fight scenes, even if he is getting long in the tooth

shame..

It's ridiculous, seems to me like they are going to cash in on:
1)the karate kid name
2) will smith's fame (surprise....welcome smith jr.!)
I might be interesting but i dont think it can capture the 80s look of a feel-good martial arts film. Karate kid was great because of the chemistry, likeable characters one could relate to, and the messages it conveyed...and that was NOT that macchio can beat up tyson with the crane, for those who still criticize his skills LOL.

FFS!!!

I'm with Neon and many others I'm sure, how the hell can Smith explain the fact that he's filming " The KARATE Kid " about KARATE which is a JAPANESE martial art in Beijing with a Chinese Kung Fu actor playing a JAPANESE KARATE master??? It really does stink of " all asians look the same, China? Japan? What's the difference? " Offence will be caused by the shitload

I was totally going to write this film off but its hanging on by a thread and that thread is Harold Zwart. Although he hasn't made an amazing film yet, I think he is a dedicated director who knows what hes going for. He is our only hope.....

Pointless Piece of Sh*t remake, Chan officially sucks worse than ever now.

I can't believe this is being remade to begin with. Worse than that Jackie Chan who really has never done a decent American Movie & don't get me wrong some of his early Martial Movies are a lot of fun & his skill is undeniable, too bad that studios really don't care about how important ORIGINAL ideas are anymore. What an absolute waste of time this is & Jackie Chan playing Miyagi is extremely sad, no one can beat the only good performance by Mr. Pat Morita, may he Rest In Piece & here's hoping he doesn't roll over in his grave.

It doesn't matter

Let the kids have THEIR movies without crying over your "childhood's being raped". YOU don't have to see it. Go watch the original if you're feeling nastolgic.

My niece and nephew are going to go batshit over this. Bottom line. This movie is going to ka-ching like a mofo.

They make their money from who goes to the movie, not who doesn't.

Karate is Japanese

I'm Asian. I don't care if a Korean actor plays a Japanese character (like John Cho playing Sulu in the new Star Trek). That's fine.

But if this new Karate Kid is taking place in Benjing CHINA, where as KARATE is strictly a Japanese martial arts, then the old adage of "All the Asians are the same" lives quite strongly in the Smith family.

This sounds like a big pile of shit. First of all, the Karate Kid shouldn't be remade. Second, JADEN SMITH!? and Jackie Chan? NO. Third, it's coming from the guy who gave us Pink Panther 2 and Cody Banks. It could only be worse if Ratner co-directed it.
