James Cameron tells us what we can expect in Avatar's new footage

08.09.2010

AVATAR is coming back to theaters for a short time in a re-release that will surely add to the film’s mind boggling box office numbers. But it’s not just for all your grandparents who missed the movie the first time, there’s also a bit of fan service with nine extra minutes of new footage jammed into the film.

What got axed in the initial cut? Speaking to MarketSaw, Cameron says not to worry, it’s nothing lame, and goes on to detail most of the scenes we can expect if we decide to shell out the cash to see it yet again.

It’s actually nine! [Extra minutes.] I added some since that press release. It’s all CG. None of it is kinda boring shots of people sitting around in offices at the base, drinking coffee. It’s all out in the rainforest, some of it is at night. There is a big hunt sequence that’s got a lot of flying, a lot of banshee stuff, riding direhorses, very high-energy, high-impact action. There’s a very powerful emotional scene towards the end that has been added back.

There’s some stuff where the Na’vi sort of counterattack after the bulldozers destroy the willowblade, that’s a night attack scene. And the aftermath of that, how the humans react to that and the steps leading to the war. There’s some stuff with Grace in the school in the jungle, there’s a creature called a stingbat which is brought back in [that one was in the video game ] as well as the sternbeast, which is the animal that they hunt. We see hundreds of those…There are some little bits that have been put back into the end battle. Little action beats, and a little bit added to the love scene, and some other night stuff. It’s all top-quality stuff, it’s all on par with the rest of the film.

Yessss, the hair-braid sex scene made it in. I always wondered why the hell they didn’t intertwine their hair tentacles in the actual film. Is that because it’s the Na’vi equivalent of showing P going straight into V, making the film into a hardcore alien porno? But they kept showing it with all the animals? Ewww.

I’m not sure if I’ll see it again. I might go with my parents, who missed it the first time, but I did see this thing like three times in IMAX 3D already. Although it would be nice to be reminded what a real 3D movie looks like after the endless amounts of shit that spawned after the film’s release.

I'm excited to see the movie again on IMAX 3D, not because of the extra footage, just because it's a cool movie.

Avatar is a good film, but....

anyone who spends THEIR hard earned money for an extra 9 minutes is a fucking loser.

Pass.

I watched Avatar once in the cinema. It was a classic example of an entertaining flick. Do I hate it? No. Do I love it? No. Will I watch it with 9 extra minutes. No. Long story short...I thank Avatar for entertaining me for 120minutes, but I'll pass on another viewing.

All this Avatar hate is just uncalled for. What is with people hating something simply b/c it's successful?

Because money going to medicore vanilla films (and straight up shitty ones too) means less support going towards truly good cinema.

Yeah, but Avatar was good cinema. How can you sit through a 3D viewing of that film and say to yourself, "This movie sucks,"? It had great effects, action, and showed a whole new alien planet. Additionally, the movie actually had a plot, unlike all the other summer blockbusters of recent years.

Lol. This Avatar hate bandwagon has pretty much become a parody of itself. Kind of like watching a Star Trek geek try to bash Star Wars.

Why only 9 minutes?

I don't get why they always only add 9 minutes. Why is the director's cut always just 9 minutes? What kind of change is 9 minutes? 'The Godfather Trilogy 1901-1980' had almost an hour of additional footage. Seems like a waste of time and money to re-release something just for 9 extra minutes, I don't care what it enhances. These directors have to stop with this 9 minutes crap, add at least 12-15 minutes or something like that. At least 12 has a two digit number, something that sounds like it's

Nine Minutes? That's it? Maybe I'll re-watch it if he paid me to. Even then it'd be a tough price. No thanks, Avatar was difficult enough to sit through the first time.

Am I happy I spent the money to see Avatar in 3D the first time around? Yes.

Is it good enough of a film for me to go back and watch an extra nine minutes? No.

Say what you will about the story, but it's hard to hate on a guy who worked his ass off, made the two highest grossing films of all time, and invented new technology for all of us aspiring filmmakers to play with.

Cameron

the movie night not be the most original, so i'm not gonna defend it. but to the people who are hating on James Cameron shut the fuck up and stop pretending to be a movie buff. Look at the mans track record and masterful films he's made in his career. its one thing criticizing a movie that was okay, but its a whole different story when you criticize a director who actually knows his shit.

"Maybe this time Worthington will actually act lol !!1!"

"James Cameron is a hack and he should've spent all that money on charity. If he could have a foursome with himself and three clones he totally would and in 3D amirite? lol"

"DANCESWITHWOLVES!POCAHONTAS!FERNGULLY! LASTSAMURAI RIPOFF!!!!1!!"

Sigh.

Some people just don't like the movie and don't think Sam Worthington is a good actor.

When a movie is re-released you're bound to hear the same criticisms.

Ocelot, I respectfully disagree. I would hardly count Avatar as a "fuck up." Even its most ardent critics agree that it is, at the very least, a technological feat. What I don't understand about the Avatar hate is that the haters are treating Avatar like it's Glitter or Date Movie or something. I get that the acting could be better. I get that you think the story could be more original. But to dismiss it entirely because of some minor flaws is very strange of the otherwise extremely forgiving

Blind AVATAR hate? I don't quite understand that.

If you actually thought that Worthington was good in this movie (or any movie he's been in it, for that matter) than I feel sorry for you.

And you really think Cameron isn't milking the shit out of this for no reason other than to add more to his $1 billion?

Point blank: AVATAR was a disappointment of massive proportions. Instead of worrying about character development, originality or plot, Cameron tried to blind us with CGI and 3D.

Fred: Yes, I do think Worthington is a decent actor, and I feel okay about myself. And yes, I do think Cameron is milking the shit out of it. But wouldn't you? Love it or hate it, Avatar is a classic now. Star Wars, Alien, Blade Runner, 2001, etc., have ALL been re-released many times. Why? Because people love seeing awesome movies in theaters! Pretty simple, really.

Ocelot: Film is a visual medium. Half the entertainment value of film is the spectacle of seeing cool stuff on a big screen. I

I highly doubt a movie like The Matrix would've been as good with super soakers instead of guns. Or that The Dark Knight would've been as awesome with RC cars in that car chase. Even simpler, small budget fare must have strong visuals. It's kind of the whole point of making good movies.

I'm going to have to go with Ocelot on this one. Take a movie like von Trier's "Dogville". The movie clocks in just shy of 3 hours and doesn't get anymore minimalist than using chalk drawings for scenery. That movie was capivating as hell. Visual effects does not a good movie make. *cough* SPEED RACER *cough*

Tyson, Speed Racer is an awesome movie visuals and story. Avatar on the other hand, I completely agree with Ocelot. The thing with Avatar though is that it is not a movie I thought was terrible. It is just painful to watch people praise it like it was Star Wars or Terminator. It was a good movie don't get me wrong but I don't believe it is a masterpiece or should even be compared to classics like Star Wars or Camerons earlier films like Aliens and Terminator 1 and 2. The characters were not

Haha. The most mind blowing thing in the movie after seeing the posters and everything in blue is at the end they showed the title like BAM "AVATAR" and it was in fucking GREEN lettering. He threw me through a fucking loop with that one. He probably fixed that for the new one though so it can be bluer.

Had a blast seeing it in IMAX when it came out, but in no way does 9 extra minutes of footage too shitty to put in when it first came out mean anyone should pay to see this again.

it looks good on blu ray though ;)
