Jason Rothenberg writes Twilight Zone screenplay for Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio

Oct. 20, 2010by: Niki Stephens

"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone..."

Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way have been developing a new TWILIGHT ZONE film and have brought a new writer on board. Jason Rothenberg will be writing a new draft of the screenplay. Rothenberg was a long time assistant who seems to finally be getting his big break in screenwriting.

Rothenberg is currently adapting THE FORBIN PROJECT, which is a new version of the 1970 Joseph Sargent-directed scifi story COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT. Ron Howard is attached to direct with Will Smith starring in, "a contemporary Frankenstein story about the world's first sentient computer and the misunderstood genius who gains power over the world because of it."

There aren't many details on the new TWILIGHT ZONE movie just yet. They are hoping to take some of the original stories written for the series by the likes of Rod Serling and Richard Matheson.

I could certainly be up for this especially since DiCaprio has his hand in it.

Extra Tidbit: Share your favorite TWILIGHT ZONE tales. Too bad we don't have a campfire or a portal that would take us to an alternative dimension.

I always thought they should do it with 4 directors like they did in the 80s, my vote would be Abrams, Nolan, Fincher and Boyle. Abrams has already admitted to being a fan of the show.

It's about time. We should be reading about the upcoming 5th or 6th Zone flick.

I'm a huge fan of the original series. Really dug the original film (but wasn't keen on the Spielberg and Dante episodes though) and the news of a new film is music to my ears.

Favorite episodes include

Where Is Everybody?
The Howling Man

among, really, many great ones throughout the seasons

Hey Niki, was there a higher resolution image for that picture because it would make a sweet wallpaper.

Having DiCaprio in a Twilight movie would be great as far as I am concerned.

I hope you mean Twilight ZONE. Not Twilight as in vampire romance.

I actually had read the screenplay for Maple Street, but didn't see it. I thought it was really good. Also, I actually think it would be kind of cool to have one of the stories be about the "Tower of Terror". Though, Disney might own some rights to that since it is an attraction at their them parks.

They did have a direct to video movie for Tower of Terror with Steve Gutenberg and Kirsten Dunst. I never saw it but I don't think it was officially Twilight Zone. Would love a better adaptation though.

Love Twilight Zone. Hopefully it turns out better than the first movie. My favorite would probably be the Monsters are Due on Maple Street. Shit goes down on the street where everything is shut off and neighbors start suspecting one another to be aliens.

Also it would be awesome if they somehow incorporated a Rod Serling intro somehow with the technology they use. I always loved when the camera panned over to Rod standing there with a cigarette and explaining whats going on. He had the perfect look and voice to introduce these tales.

my favorite story

the very first episode "where is everybody?" is the best unsettling through out the entire episode A man finds himself alone in a strange town. He is dressed in an Air Force jumpsuit, but he does not remember who he is or how he got there. The town seems deserted, but everywhere the man goes, he seems to find proof that someone had been there recently food is cooking on the stoves, water is still dripping in the sinks, and cigars are still burning in the ashtrays. He grows more and more

He grows more and more unsettled as he wanders through the empty town, looking for someone, anyone, to talk to, all the while having the strange feeling that he is being watched. He finally collapses next to a street crossing, and presses a button labeled WALK. It is revealed that the walk button is, in fact, a panic button. He is really a training astronaut named Mike Ferris, confined, within an aircraft hangar, to an isolation room for 484 hours and thirty-six minutes (over 20 days), testing to see if he can stay sane cooped up in a small spacecraft for the duration of a trip to the Moon. The town was a complete hallucination, an escape valve for his sensory-deprived mind. As Ferris is carried out of the hangar on a stretcher, he sees the Moon above him, and says wistfully, "Hey! Don't go away up there! Next time, it won't be just a dream or a nightmare. Next time, it'll be for real. So don't go away we'll be up there in a little while ...".

its a great show but its real hit or miss some episodes just aren't as good as others

I would love if DiCaprio was involved in one of the stories, as well as a bunch of other A-list actors.
