Jeremy Irons says Batman vs Superman script still not finished

Mar. 13, 2014by:

Production is underway on BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, but according to Jeremy Irons, the script isn't done yet. The new Alfred Pennyworth revealed the news to Variety in a recent interview. Irons says he's read an earlier draft, however, “The script isn’t entirely finished."

It's not completely unheard of for a movie to start filming without a finished script, but some will see this as a huge red-flag, and more evidence that "DC doesn't have a clue what they're doing with BATMAN VS SUPERMAN." I'm sure there are a few things that still need to be tweaked, but I'm also positive the final script isn't going to be that different from the previous one, so it's not like Zack Snyder is just blindly filming the upcoming movie.

Jeremy Irons also went on to talk about how excited he is to work with Ben Affleck.

“I think (his casting) is a wonderful idea. He’s a lovely man and an interesting actor. I’m looking forward to getting to know him. I’ve only met him once.”

Of course Jeremy Irons wasn't going to say anything negative about Ben Affleck, however it's still good to hear he's pumped to be working with him. The relationship between Bruce and Alfred has always been one of my favorite things from the comics (and movies), and I'm confident both actors will do a fantastic job playing these characters.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN also stars Henry Cavill, Jesse Eisenberg and Gal Gadot, and will be in theaters on May 6th, 2016.

Films sometimes shoot without a finished script. Batman & Robin starting shooting without a finished script. So did the Lone Ranger.

Jaws and Iron Man only reworked a shooting draft as they were filmming because dailies were showing them that certain scenes weren't working. Casablanca was notorious for this because they couldn't make the ending work on film, so they kept reworking the shooting draft. Every movie does this to some point. Though, they had completed scripts before filmming began.

Lawrence of Arabia was different, as the writer was arrested before finishing the ending. Still, David Lean says that he didn't

Lawrence of Arabia was different, as the writer was arrested before finishing the ending. Still, David Lean says that he didn't get to finish the movie the way he intended because of that. And he is quoted as saying "My own criticism is that the second half shows the forced pace at which you had to jump from point to point. As it nears the end I get a bit stiffled with keeping up. Know what I mean? Not your fault of course, but a lesson not to be forgotten about starting [filming] with an unfinished script."

Not surprising news at all. WB execs are probably micro-managing this project to the nth degree.

Giving Snyder/DC/WB too much credit, but....

What if they KNOW what they are doing? They floored everyone with the Batman v. Superman announcement (I would have gone with a proper MoS sequel and THEN BvS) and maybe they got rolling on this and are filming BvS and Justice League at the same time? Probably not, but wishful thinking.

It seems that they have seen what marvel has been doing and instead of building steam one film at a time like marvel they want to throw an Hail Mary with the one movie to try to catch up.

They're trying to figure out how to put Aquaman in it and he's just dragging everything down. F-YOU Aquaman!!!

I'm hoping the Chris Terrio punch-up does wonders for it.

Jeremy Irons was perfect casting for this and I think he'll do a great job and be just as great as Caine was in his respected films.

The unfinished script doesn't bother me. Since they pushed the film back that means they're actually trying to do the best job they can in delivering us the best film they can.

Agree LelekPL

I'm not worried. They just started shooting in Metamora, basically exterior scenes and such. This pretty much goes in line with them pushing it back. Probably the dialog and more intimate scenes are what are not finished yet and being tweeked so they get it just right. If it was still coming out next year I'd be worried, but with the extra year and still finishing the script, it gives me hope they ARE trying to get this right.

No red flags with this

It's absolutely normal for films to start shooting without a finished script. Avengers did some changes, Avatar and many others. They can start shooting all the scenes that are certainly going to be in the final movie, action scenes, and there's still A LOT of time to shoot the rest. It comes out in 2016 so there's no need to panic... yet.
