Jeremy Renner is clearly franchisable -- he's now part of the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE series, he'll play Marvel's sharpshooter Hawkeye in at least two movies, and his fairy tale action-adventure HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS could surely find further monsters to slay.

Now Renner will take over the alias previously held by Matt Damon in the pseudo-sequel THE BOURNE LEGACY. The heated hunt for an actor to lead the series in a fresh direction after the initial trilogy had nearly every male biped pursuing or pursued for the part, but Renner was a favorite and has reportedly now accepted the new assassin assignment.

Other actors who were considered as the new BOURNE star include Garrett Hedlund (TRON LEGACY), Dominic Cooper (CAPTAIN AMERICA's Howard Stark), Luke Evans (IMMORTALS), Joel Edgerton (ANIMAL KINGDOM), Taylor Kitsch (BATTLESHIP) and Logan Marshall-Green (PROMETHEUS).

Writer-director Tony Gilroy (MICHAEL CLAYTON) and Universal are tapping into the established BOURNE "world", and Deadline says Renner will play "an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Bourne." The studio wants the new movie in theaters next summer.

hmmmm
Oddly enough he kind of looks like the Blackbriar operative that Bourne decides to not kill near the end of Ultimatum. It would be interesting to continue the story from that guy's prospective. In the end though i was on the "Bana for Bourne" bandwagon after seeing Hanna so i'm a little disappointed.

Come on... really? Nothing against Renner, because I think he is insanely talented, but he plays a supporting role so much better than the lead. And I'm already getting sick of hearing about how he is being tapped for every other role. Way to go Hollywood.... way to go.

Renner's awesome
BUT FUCK THIS.

For one he's already doing Mission Impossible, another spy-action movie... they might as well just have gotten Daniel Craig to do it.

Secondly, no. Just no. It's too soon for a reboot and thankfully this isn't a reboot... okay, I get it. But Damon is Bourne, period. That's it.

Yet they want to milk the franchise in an unprecedented way. "No no,...

shut the fuck up and change the title of the movie (get rid of the BOURNE if it's not BOURNE) and change the name of the character.

Then, THEN I would be excited as all HELL to see this! until then... lol, no thanks.

Wait and see, but
I'm giving this a green because if this was anyone other than Renner it probably would not work. And it still may not work, but the cast and crew they are putting behind this is really intriguing to me at this point. If they were making an original spy/assassin movie, I'd be ok with it. There's no reason for this to be a bourne movie, except the studio hopes to make more money by connecting it to a successful franchise. And how can Bourne be a code name. When the government was talking about him in the movies they clearly meant Damon's character, not Bourne A or B or whatever.

If they are going to make it might as well pick someone who kicks ass, and Renner is that guy. Hope down the line they can have Renner and Damon kick some ass together.

Pick one... why would any actor want two seperate franchises as a similar character? Bad move for Renner IMO.

There should not be another Bourne film but if there is gonna be at least it looks like it is going to a very good actor in Jeremy Renner. I can dig this choice if not the actual movie.

First of all, they should have ended the Bourne series, when Damon wasnt able to continue the series..but like the classic saying, " The Show Must go on"...if anybody should replace Damon, its cool that Jeremy Renner is their guy.
Hopefully he doesnt take away from the great job, Matt Damon did..but merely adds to the series another chapter that stands alone.

who I could never see carrying on either Mission Impossible or Bourne. I just don't see him as an action hero.

I know he looks young but Renner is an old guy actually to be getting thrown into these franchises all of a sudden, it's kinda strange. If he wasn't the man, I would be opposed to this, but Jeremy Renner....is the man.

I was against the idea at first of a whole new Bourne movie without Damon, but with the new concept and with Renner starring, this is definitely something I can get behind and be excited for.

I've had enough of this guy already
So he's gonna ruin two franchises now, be the worst superhero in the Marvel Universe, and play a gritty version of Gretel, this guy sucks.

Off the top of my head
I can't think of a single role for Jeremy Renner that doesn't have him as some kind of cop, soldier or assassin. Is he being type cast?

Go Team Renner
'Identity' was Bourne righting his own conscience. 'Supremacy' was Bourne bringing closure to his victims' families. 'Ultimatum' was Bourne trying to save his fellow assassins. So 'Legacy' should be about what effect his efforts had on the world. Done properly, and Gilroy is more than capable, this movie will enrich the trilogy as an appropriate epilogue.

A Great Idea!
I personally love all three Bourne movies (I'm actually in the rare category of someone who enjoys that frenetic energy Greengrass' shaky cam brought to the series) and think this is a great idea to continue the franchise with a different lead. I personally love all three Bourne movies (I'm actually in the rare category of someone who enjoys that frenetic energy Greengrass' shaky cam brought to the series) and think this is a great idea to continue the franchise with a different lead. It won't be like Bond, with different actors playing the same role; Renner will have a chance to be someone different but with similar training. The title sums it up perfectly: this is Bourne's legacy. The new hero is following Derek Webb, known as Jason Bourne. If Renner (a terrific actor) can bring the edge he has shown in films like The Hurt Locker and The Town, this could be a great new face for this franchise. Plus, the door is open for Matt Damon to make an appearance in a future installment.

I am actually excited about this now. Tony Gilroy writing and directing (his Bourne screenplays contributed to its quality throughout), Renner playing a "more dangerous" Treadstone operative, and the original trilogy is left alone (I love the ending scene of Ultimatum and how it brought the series full circle, as rodolforever mentioned). After all the concern, this actually seems like the best approach for continuing this series.

Altough I`m a big fan of Matt Damon as Bourne I think his history arc was closed in Ultimatum, I mean hea already know his true name and what treadstone was all about and is left for dead...So I think is a good ending ...plus the last scene floating in the water is a great bookend.
Jeremy Renner certainly has the talent and the skill to make bourne belivable...and as we know that BOURNE...

Just shows they not gonna go an Orginal route choosing a actor rebooting another spy movie. I like Bourne I like Renner but this is terrible idea its like if Tom Cruse decided to play James Bond it just doesnt seem right.

I think I'm about as cool as can be. As in, this feels predictable, but not terrible. The idea of this movie is all sorts of wrong. And I had hoped Renner wouldn't go for another franchise, he's already proven himself as an actor, and he's already got projects lined up for this type of thing. But he's good at what he does. And he'll be good in this, too, even if the movie shouldn't exist.
