J.K. Simmons discusses his approach to Commissioner Gordon in Justice League

Think whatever you want about Zack Snyder's vision for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE and how it feeds into your expectations for what he might have planned for the two-part JUSTICE LEAGUE... but at least he gave you some small ray of sunshine to hold onto for the future expansion of the DC Cinematic Universe by casting J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon. Now it's not as if Simmons is front and center in the role for something like Fox's GOTHAM series, which would be amazing, but it's a nice bit of casting that has you hoping maybe at some point this Universe might come together with fantastic complementary parts like the Oscar-winning actor in place.

As a result of being a part of the DCU now, it was only a matter of time before he started getting asked about what type of character his Commissioner Gordon might be and how he fits into a film like JUSTICE LEAGUE that's heavily populated by superheroes. That opportunity was taken by DP/30 as they talked to Simmons about his latest film THE MEDDLER. While he didn't have too many specifics to offer up for JUSTICE LEAGUE, he did give some perspective on the long game of his involvement as well as his approach to playing Gordon.

I don’t get started on that until June, and my part in the first one is very small. I’m excited to be playing that iconic character in that iconic series... I’m going into a thing that hopefully will be two, three, four, maybe more movies for me, and my part in the first one is really very small. But obviously, we know who the guy is. We know his whole backstory, based on the comic book. So, I’m just gonna finish doing my research on that. And probably not watch the other actors who have played the part, because that is kind of intimidating, honestly, and I don’t think I would find that to be productive. So, I’ll do my take.

Do the research. Play the part. Make him your own. Sounds like a simple enough take on the new Commissioner Gordon who we'll get a small glimpse of in JUSTICE LEAGUE - PART ONE, scheduled for release on November 17, 2017.

This is almost as annoying as when Marvel cast Idris Elba as "guy who stands at bridge". Except worse, because with Snyder in charge, *everyone* he casts is that guy. My only explanation for not hating Batman in BvS is that Ben Affleck secretly directed his own scenes.

Such a great actor wasted on Snyder. The entire cast is wasted on Snyder. The DC Universe has already been wasted by Snyder.

Remember the days of Nolan? When DC was king? I miss that.

Are you kidding? The only good Nolan movie was The Dark Knight. Batman Begins was tolerable and The Dark Knight Rises was utter nonsense.
I don't get peoples boners for Nolanverse movies. 1 of 3 isn't great odds. Mind you that 1 of 3 was a spectacular movie.

Batman Begins was the best, most, true to character of any Batman movie. GodMagnus is right about TDKR though, that was bad.

I agree 100% about Begins. TDKR was certainly disappointing coming off of the heels of two awesome Batman movies, but I don't think it was a bad movie. Certainly not on the level of bad that the Schumacher & Snyder movies were.

I really wish he stayed on as JJJ in Spiderman

These DC movies will do nothing but tarnish his reputation in Comic book movies. Its like a reverse Green Lantern. Ryan went from DC to Marvel and his success and popularity skyrocketed 10x. Simmons is going from Marvel universe to DC and his success will plummet (if Skull Island doesn't kill his fame first)
