Good news! Joaquin Phoenix will come out of hiding and his "rap career" to be in a movie.

According to Resul Pookutty, the sound recordist for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, just got a job working on the adaptation of THE BEAUTIFUL CIGAR GIRL by Daniel Stashower. In the film, Phoenix will play the role of Edgar Allan Poe.

This is what Pookutty had to say, “I couldn’t be happier because I am doing a period film. It is a very special challenge because I have to recreate the sound textures of New York in 1854. It’s an adaptation of The Beautiful Cigar Girl by Daniel Stashower and based on an eerie real-life experience of author Edgar Allen Poe which happened just months before his death. Joaquin plays Edgar Allen Poe.”

Here's a brief summary of the book's plot:

"In July 1841, Mary Rogers, a beautiful young New York cigar clerk, was strangled and her body tossed in the Hudson River, a crime so ghastly that it pitted the city's sensational tabloids against each other in a contest of rumor and speculation. Due to a bungled investigation from start to finish, the murder appealed enough to Edgar Allan Poe that he co-opted it for ''The Mystery of Marie Rogêt.'' Knocking back and forth between the unending case and Poe's utterly depressing life cycle of debt, poverty, and alcoholism, Daniel Stashower's Cigar Girl takes a solidly comprehensive look at the predecessor to today's all-too-common media crime frenzies."

Welcome back non-haggard looking Joaquin. We missed you.

Sounds good
Good actor, good subject. Anything that gets him to stop looking and acting like Ted Kazinsky :)

I knew his retirement wouldn't be forever, I hope this is what he comes back with.

Sadly, it's not true. I just read that his rep has denied the whole thing.

Wrap or rap?
Did he wrap his career or begin a rap career? Either way I think he's perfect for the role of Poe.

Of course it was an act. You're an idiot if you believed it for one second. He already "came out" on a suicide prevention video posted on YouTube with Miley Cyrus. Shaved beard and saneness and all. Link below

The whole act
brewsky mentioned not believing the "retirement" announcement. Just reading these posts, though, I'm more and more surprised that people have bought into this whole ACT.

There's a clip of Joaquin on Letterman pre-hobo where he's clearly level-headed and easygoing. I'd maybe have fallen for this nutso shit initially, if it hadn't been for the announcement that his brother-in-law (Casey Affleck) was "documenting" his venture into hip-hop.

As I said below, it's a funny yet predictable gag. To me. Really baffled by some people here. No disrespect, just very surprised.

And on the early celeb death thing, he's be THE LAST person to end up ODing. First off, as stated I think it's all a mockumentary. And secondly (and more importantly), his bro (River Phoenix) died that way when Joaquin was very young.

He's so good that I'm willing to forgive him for his strange charades, which I might add, were actually quite entertaining at least.

Celebrity Death
I foresee Phoenix to become another celebrity death within the next year. His recent crazy antics, long hair and beard with shades, horrible interviews, rapping, etc... just sounds like a pill popping overdose coming. Sorry to be the downer :/

I would rather not.
Pheonix rubbed me the wrong way with the rapping stuff. Normally real lives of actors don't bother me when it comes to performing. But he kind of abused his position in my mind and it didn't sit well with me. Sadly now I'll have to see this film with a sad little man playing a truly sad man and... I'm really not interested in that. He's always been a bit of an over actor to me anyway.

Nah. I'm convinced it was all a stunt that, in theory, was much funnier. I think like Casey Affleck was directing a "documentary" (actually a mock-doc) of his attempt at rap. A decent idea, possibly cool outcome, but like honestly, the whole shtick was a bit obvious.

It would be really interesting...
...to see Phoenix play The Joker in a small role in Nolan's next. He'd make for a creepy, esoteric, incarcerated Joker Batman must consult in prison for information.
