John August to write Monsterpocalypse for Tim Burton

I’m not saying that I lost faith in Tim Burton after ALICE IN WONDERLAND but…OK, I am saying I lost faith in Tim Burton. ALICE was just so bad in every possible way that I can’t believe this is the same guy who directed EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE or hell, even BIG FISH. But I guess it’s that last film that does lend a bit of hope to one of Burton’s potential projects. John August, who collaborated with Burton on BIG FISH, has signed on to write the script for MONSTERPOCALYPSE, a film Burton is developing for DreamWorks.

While August’s participation looks to be a go, Burton still doesn’t seem to know what he wants to do next. Warner Bros. is still hot for Burton to direct Johnny Depp in DARK SHADOWS. The WB won’t take that sitting down because a delay on DARK SHADOWS could potentially conflict with Depp’s work on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 and make it unlikely that SHADOWS ever gets made.

Should it work out, MONSTER would be the sixth collaboration between August and Burton after the aforementioned FISH and SHADOWS plus CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, THE CORPSE BRIDE and FRANKENWEENIE, which is in production at Disney.

It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out and how it effects a number of other films in development but as for whether the film itself will be interesting remains to be seen. Can’t say I have faith anymore.
