Kitamura body horror

With gore-soaked entries like VERSUS and MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN to his credit, director Ryuhei Kitamura obviously knows what to do with a chunky red mess.

We heard the other day (via STYD) that Kitamura would delve into icky Cronenberg territory for some “body horror” with something called TERATOMA. Now Moviehole got more gruesome details direct from the project producer Joel Soisson (TRICK OR TREAT, FEAST).

I hatched the idea about a year and a half ago after watching a number of news reports about these strange tumors called teratoma popping up in people all over the world,” Soisson says. “They are essentially masses of rapidly multiplying cells that for some unknown reason begin to differentiate into different anatomical tissues. You can find hair, teeth, eyes, even primitive nervous systems in these things. It’s really creepy. A kind of spontaneously-generated alien life that can exist inside us our entire lives. One kid had a hand growing inside his brain. Another woman was sporting a 220 pound whopper of a teratoma.”

Writers Jim Agnew and Sean Keller (Argento’s GIALLO) literally fleshed out the story before Kitamura came onto the project. Soisson is also busy producing the certain-to-be-awesome action/horror project CONDITION DEAD with director Patrick Lussier (MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D).

Kitamura suddenly seems quite busy — according to THR, he’s also now planning to direct MAGDALENA, based on Top Cow’s comic book about a descendant of Mary Magdalene, who now wields the Spear of Destiny and fights demons for the Catholic Church.
