Kurt turns down Sly?

Mar. 23, 2009by: Dave Davis

Since it was first announced, we've been closely monitoring Sylvester Stallone's action flick THE EXPENDABLES, if only to see who would be the next familiar face added to the cast.

Sadly, one of those faces apparently will NOT be the Cash to Sly's Tango -- Kurt Russell was approached for the project and turned it down. Or at least an attempt was made, but whether it even got to Russell's ocular/auditory organs remains a question.

As Stallone says (via StalloneZone): "I know that many people on the site have asked for Kurt Russell. I asked for him too.  Actually, I was taken aback when asked to put the request in a letter and send it to his agent.  Subsequently, I was called back by the agent several days later after refusing to send a letter and he said Kurt Russell is not interested in ‘ensemble acting’ at this time. So, People, I came, I saw, I failed."

Now, if that said he wasn't interested in 'ensemble acting' since POSEIDON turned out to be a colossal floating turd, that might seem more believable. But Russell's recent films have found him as a colorful background character in SKY HIGH, playing off a horse (and Dakota Fanning) in DREAMER, and getting about 15 minutes of screentime in GRINDHOUSE, so it seems like less of a hubris issue on Russell's part and more like agent cockblocking. But who knows?

Either way, it's quite a pisser that such an iconic genre actor won't be part of Sly's action (not that it isn't already overflowing with awesome).

Extra Tidbit: Maybe Russell will catch wind of how much the fans want him in the flick and have a change of heart...

What!

The addition of Kurt would have been a good one. Thunderdome made a very good point, "shouldn't Stallone have Kurt's personal phone number?" That's right, what the heck? Anyway, Kurt would actually fit in this movie. Jet, Jason, and some of the newer action guysare cool too. I think they will do fine, but they are not from Sly's time. Norris, Arnold, then came Dolph, JCVD, Seagal. I actually think that Michael Biehn might be a good fit for this movie. Throw in some Bruce Willis, Patrick Swayze,

If he were still alive Charles Bronson would be great too. Peace

I dont get it. I seriously dont.
I dont understand what the hype is all about. Most of the actors cast have appeared in BAD action movies.

Kurt Russell would have actually made me kind of want to see it, but its still not happening. Maybe one day when my brother rents it cause he think its going to kick ass, but we'll both realize its just as bad as Rambo.

Aw Man!!!

I hope he reconsiders. This movie just oozes awesomeness, and I'd love to see Kurt Russell in this movie...even if he just does a cameo.

BTW, is it just me or does anyone else think Kurt Russell would've played a BADASS Wolverine 20 yrs ago...or even today if they did the story where the Sentinels kill pretty much every mutant.

SERIOUSLY?

I know agents turn things down for actors all the time but in all seriousness shouldn't Stallone have Kurt's personal phone number?

Kurt Russell has been working since he was a kid and has had a pretty successful career in that time. I think he can pick and choose his projects and deservedly so.

Kurt Russell is my favorite actor of all time. I really hope he reconsiders doing The Expendables. Kurt usually is the "leading man", but in this case he should just join the ensemble of bad asses and have fun.

Dear Kurt,

Not doing The Expendables would be fubar, you need to do it!

Extra Extra Tidbit

Russell's last movie was in 2007 and IMDB has nothing scheduled since then. Apparently he's not interesting in working, period.

I would be willing to bet $1000 bucks that Kurt's agent never even told him about the movie. Booooooo.

Don't hold your breath for Carl Weathers

Don't you guys remember all the pissing and moaning that CW did over wanting to be in the last Rocky movie - and not just in recaps? I think there is some bad blood there now, unfortunately. I could be wrong - but I'm guessing that's why Carl isn't in it. Love his work, but I doubt it's going to happen. I think Terry Crews is the "Carl Substitute" (not that TC isn't awesome as well).

I'm with TheReverendDan, I would just really love to see Carl Weathers in this flick. As for Russell, I'll keep my fingers crossed for Tango & Cash 2.

@Holyhaw

it's funny you mention dirty harry and kurt russell's plissken together, because russell admits pilssken was pretty much his bad imitation of clint eastwood's characters with his own personal spin.

I'm not the biggest fan of '80s action, but I have serious respect for a film that's bringing all these talents together.

Of the '80s action stars though, I have always had a soft spot for Russell, in part because unlike some his peers, he was never afraid of playing the goofy, vulnerable guy, or in the case of Snake Plissken, probably the most bad-ass anti-hero since Dirty Harry.

And after saying that, I'm not all that let down by his exclusion.

Stallone and Lundgren have been

Stallone and Lundgren have been courting the Direct-to-DVD bins lately (then Sly made Rocky Balboa and Rambo). Statham and Li are at the top of their respective games (Li's actually just over the hill).

Russell, meantime, has kept himself working and showing off his considerable acting ability, which some of those other guys are lacking in. I think his agent was probably acting on his behalf, or phrasing it in a way Russell himself wouldn't, but I think it's for the best.

As far as I know this isn't going to be Stallone's last movie, why do we need to get everybody that he has ever worked with in it???

Relax people, the cast is pretty big (in all ways) as it is.

maybe he didn't want to do a (possibly shitty action)movie and wasn't able to tell Sly directly so he told him to contact his agent?
