The Ten Spot: Most Disturbing Movies Ever

Just in time for Halloween, we bring you a Ten Spot dedicated to the perverse, the disgusting, the bizarre, and the depraved. Only one movie on this list had a wide theatrical release in the United States and the rest are the movies that you hear about from a friend of a friend of a serial killer. If you have sat through all of these movies with a straight face, you are a sociopath. If you chuckled a little, we should go grab some beers sometime. I give you the ten most disturbing movies of all time.

Honorable Mention - Requiem for a Dream

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM is one of those movies that is brilliantly acted and uniquely edited and yet you can only watch it once or twice. It is disturbing in the fact that the depiction of addiction that it presents is real in its surreality. Watching the simultaneous downward spiral of Jared Leto and Ellen Burstyn is heartbreaking and savage. From the electroshock therapy to the arm amputation to the double dildo scene, this movie will haunt you.

#10 - Antichrist

Lars Von Trier is a sick bastard. No one wants to see Willem Dafoe's penis, let alone after it is smashed by a wooden log and then jacked off until he cums blood. Yeah, that is a seriously f*cked up scene. Plus, you get an extreme close-up on a rusty pair of scissors cutting off a clitoris. But, none of that compares to the opening sequence which could be one of the most jarring uses of slow motion in any film. Chaos most definitely reins.

#9 - Cannibal Holocaust

Probably the first disturbing movie I ever saw. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY has nothing on this progenitor of the found footage genre. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is not exactly a good movie, but it is one you will likely fast forward to for the key scenes of castration and boob hanging. I personally prefer the crazy ass CANNIBAL FEROX, but nothing tops this jacked up classic.

#8 - Gozu

Japanese director Takashi Miike has better movies like ICHI THE KILLER and AUDITION which feature elements of a disturbing nature, but it is GOZU that comprises a full running time of crazy ass scenes strung together: the Yakuza attack dog, the lactating old lady, the cow head guy, the dry cleaners, and the bizarre locals. I imagine David Lynch would watch this movie and getting a hard on.

#7 - The Exorcist

This is the CITIZEN KANE of disturbing movies. The rare movie that holds up years and years later, it is less the moments of head spinning, pea soup puking horror that make this movie unsettling but rather the surreal dream sequences that plague Father Damien throughout the film. The white ghost face of Pazuzu and the silent screams of his elderly mother are way more creepy than anything. But, any time you have a young girl masturbating with a crucifix you are in f*cked up territory.

#6 - Eraserhead

Some would say BLUE VELVET is more messed up but ERASERHEAD is the pinnacle of what people call Lynchian. Auditory and visual flashes of twisted flesh and distorted mechanical monstrosities, ERASERHEAD cannot be compared to anything else in terms of the bizarre. That damn creepy bird baby thing is one of those scenes you just cannot unsee.

#5 - Salo

Scalping, brading, eyes being cut out, rape, torture, sodomy. Ah, the feel good movies of the Seventies! SALO was the final film from director Pier Paolo Pasolini and boy did he go out with a bang. This movie is banned in various countries to this day due to the depraved nature of what is shown on screen. The Criterion edition is out of print, but if you get a chance to watch this film in some way, you may not be able to sit through the entire two hours.

#4 - Begotten

My personal favorite on this list, BEGOTTEN is a surreal movie from director E. Elias Merhige. No dialogue is spoken and only incidental music is heard as you watch God kill himself with a straight razor, Mother Earth is born from his body who then jerks him off. Eventually Flesh on Bone (aka Jesus aka Seizure Man) arrives and the rest is the retelling of the rise and fall of Christ. The movie is hard to watch and has some truly messed up images. Marilyn Manson used scenes from the movie for one of his music videos. I actually found this on a shelf at a Blockbuster in Colorado and still have the VHS copy. It is definitely a unique movie and one that you will not soon forget.

#3 - Aftermath

AFTERMATH is a short film by Nacho Cerda and the first of two that involve necrophilia on this list. What starts out as a film showcasing an autopsy soon devolves into a violent and disturbingly depraved sexual smorgasbord that involves blood, butts, and detached body parts. At just over 30 minutes long, this movie feels a hell of a lot longer and if you can sit through the duration you will be rewarded with an equally creepy smoothie recipe.

#2 - Nekromantik

Jörg Buttgereit is known amongst horror fans as one of the more controversial figures due specifically to NEKROMANTIK. Many of you likely recognize the title of the movie but may not have seen the film itself. The movie is more than just a shocking exercise in depravity and does have some competent direction. But, this is overshadowed by the sheer amount of insanity in the movie. I mean, if you ever needed to know how to give a corpse an erection, this movie will show you how. Good luck finding a decent copy of the movie on DVD unless you are looking to shell out over a hundred bucks (I wouldn't).

#1 - A Serbian Film

When THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE was released, everyone was shocked in the mainstream media about how f*cked up it was. I wonder if they had ever heard of A SERBIAN FILM. This...this movie is just f*cked in every way possible. From the completely nihilistic and depressing ending or the entire premise of the film, this movie is completely wrong in every way. But, it is the scene that involves a pregnant woman that you will never forgive yourself for witnessing. I still cannot understand why that scene was filmed. I have an extremely high tolerance for f*cked up shit, but A SERBIAN FILM crosses any line that I have. Seriously, beyond f*cked.

Go and watch the August Underground movies. They are more f**ked up than anything listed here. The 3rd is so extremely messed up there is a scene which made my friend throw up constantly for at least a few minutes. The movies on this list dont even compare to August Underground. Not even on the same level! And they have story to them. And all the gore is so real you could sware you're watching something that is really happening.

interesting list

one that totally got me was The Girl Next Door....supposedly based on a true story, about the extreme abuse of a girl n her sibling, by their own aunt and cousins....the blowtorch 'circumcision' of the girl was something i'll never be able to forget.....

also, if any of you have seen the uncensored version of Caligula....well truth is often stranger than fiction, but the film definitely delves into the depraved mind of the former emperor, and leaves you wondering just which version was more

Full Sequence

I'm shocked that Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) didn't make it high on this list. The first movie was corny but 2 was stomach turning. I can't imagine what HC3 Final Sequence will be like.
I zipped through boring parts of Irreversible but that is one messed up film too.

Things I've seen

Salo was so disturbing I took a shower after watching it, my scalp actually felt itchy..creepy. My buddy worked at a film house, as a guy was walking out of Antichrist, he fainted! Begotten is uncomfortable and can actually can be found on YouTube (don't snitch!)

in my opinion

I think the exorcist should be number 1 on this list. If we think about it, scary movies before 1973 were really nothing, things like the birds or psycho. I mean they are great movies but nothing to really take to bed with you. Now the exorcist came out and totally changed the game of scary movies. This girl fucking lifted from her bed and stabbed her girly with a [link] Also, the exorcist is really the only one on this list that has really made an impact big enough for almost everyone to know

Omg thank you! None of these movies (no, not even A Serbian Film) even compares to the August Underground movies, i cant remember their individual names, but the 3rd one is my favorite. The most extreme and f**ked up of all of them. The scene with the pregnant lady made my friend vomit all over the floor and himself.

This list should be grossest not most disturbing. In The Company of Men is very disturbing when pulled apart and analysed.

Irreversible as mentioned below is excellent. It's nasty, gory, but also disturbing in it's statement. That's where most gore fests fall flat. They can't reach into your brain with an idea so they blind you with blood. Too easy.

Also White Chicks. The fact that a movie was made called White Chicks with comedians in white face makeup and released without a single word of objection is massively fucking disturbing.

brilliant film

There seems to be a lot of 'hate' for this one because it is so extreme but honestly, I was surprised how good of an actual movie it was. As long as you're open to it I'm sure most will find a well made, thrilling, intriguing and very creepy and effective horror film. This is more than just a movie made to be extreme like I had initially thought, bravo to the filmmakers!

A Serbian Film maybe more disgusting than say Irreversible and Come and See but the bad special effects (evidently rubber baby doll) make it a hell of a lot easier to watch than the latter 2 disturbing classics. I always say, a disturbing film has to still be good if you take out the gore, this is not the case with ASF, which is plain C-grade bullshit.

This should've been called the 10 most gory films not disturbing.

ANTROPOPHAGUS is another good one. Nothing says "disturbing" like a cannibal ripping the fetus out of a pregnant woman and eating it.

Most of these movies seem like they have no plot. They're probably made for shock value alone. I usually can't get into such films. I was expecting films a bit more mainstream. Films like: Jacob's Ladder, Red White And Blue, Martyrs, Irreversible, Inside, etc.

Although I don't care much for movies on this level of disturbing, I do enjoy reading about them. I find some of the levels of depravity some of these films go to so beyond anything humane it's funny. But this list is missing one film: Tetsuo The Iron Man. One of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. Heck, there's a scene in the film, probably it's more disturbing, where a woman gets fucked by a drill penis. Yes, you read that correctly. Very disturbing film.

While I can't compare it with these, since I haven't seen most of them, there is a Hungarian movie that came out a few years back called Taxidermia.

While I can't compare it with these, since I haven't seen most of them, there is a Hungarian movie that came out a few years back called Taxidermia.

A loosely strung-together set of stories including a guard who spends nights running a candle flame fetishistically over his naked body, a love triangle between two obese champion eaters and their equally-obese paramour (in the competition scenes, they turn a wheel and vomit up everything they just ingested straight at the camera). And finally, the son of one of them, who is a taxidermist, and seriously disturbed.

Anyway, it's the kind of movie I still think about and wonder should I really have watched the whole thing?

Strangely, The Exorcism Of Emily Rose moved me more than this movie.

I was going to say, without Begotten and Nekromantik this list would be invalid. Well, good on you - this seems pretty darn comprehensive! My favorite of the bunch is Salo. Pasolini was a genius. Begotten is great stuff, too.

No Irreversible...

That is nasty horrible film, very tough to watch.
Just researching some of these films (that I've not heard of) has made me feel queasy. Not sure I want to actually see all of them. Begotten looks interesting from an imagery perspective.

Call me a weenie but I generally tend to avoid movies like these. I'd say the most disturbing movie I've seen is Blood Diamond, not so much for gore but for subject matter (child soldiers in Africa). Great movie but I never want to see it again. I know it probably doesn't hold a candle to most of the movies on this list.

Right when I clicked on the page and read Antichrist I immediately thought of the opening scene. As fucked up as the rest of the movie is, that opening scene is like watching a beautifully shot Jared commercial gone horribly wrong.

A serbian film isnt just a seriously disturbing movie, its also a really shit movie. If you havent seen it, i wouldnt advise it, its terribly boring. I would have thought Irreversible would have been on this list, its probably the only "sick" movie I have ever watched and actually enjoyed to any degree (and the excorcist of course).

Salo's been back in print for 4 years now. Amazon just shows the out-of-print cover by default.

So no "Human Centipede" nor my personal favorite, Se7en...?

I'm glad to say that, of all these films, I've only ever seen The Exorcist. They all sound like over the top crap to me. I'm surprised that something so blatantly "disturbing" as The Human Centipede doesn't even warrant a top 10. This tells me that the films you list have no place in my "to watch" list.

Se7en disturbed me greatly. You mention one film that can only be watched once or twice. That is Se7en for me...seen it once, and will never watch it again.

I guess there's more

Most films that show just strictly depravity or shock for shock's sake-style cinema are anathema to me. At least films like THE EXORCIST or REQUIEM FOR A DREAM are something that have any kind of value on this list. The rest just seems to be one film trying to outsicken the other. ANTICHRIST is a film I couldn't watch after the opening, not because I was so utterly disturbed by it, but it was just so pathetically desperate to shock.

Frankly, I dare not watch A Serbian Film. Heard a lot of things about it but still not gutsy enough to watch it.

Don't do it. I've watched almost every horror film known to man, including everything on this lis. If I could UNWATCH any of them, I'd UNWATCH A Serbian Film.

Nice list but "a serbian film" is highly overrated. The violence in this is so ridiculous that you can´t take it serious any more. Come on, killing someone with your penis...really? Sadly one of the most disturbing movie I ever seen seems to make it to no list. Watch "men behind the sun" and realize that it´s based on facts and you´ve go a really distubing movie!
