Could this be our first real substantial lead as to the casting of the SPIDER-MAN 4 villain? Movieline claims to have "confirmed with sources close to the film" that John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway have entered negotiations to star as the villains of the film. As they report, Malkovich (who was at one point was in negotiations to star as Green Goblin in the original film) would star as The Vulture, a golden era Spidey villain and a member of the original Sinister Six (alongside Doc Ock, Mysterio, Kraven, Sandman and Electro).

But the more interesting report is that while Hathaway would be playing the Felicia Hardy character, she won't be Black Cat. This is apparently to cut down on confusion between that character and IRON MAN 2's Black Widow and Batman villain Catwoman. She'll instead play a Vulture sidekick called The Vulturess. I checked the calendar and it's not April 1st. The reason for no Dylan Baker/Lizard as they report is that they want a villain with a human face and not just some rampaging monster. Which makes sense and would theoretically preclude Mysterio as well.

What do you think? Does this sound as ridiculous to you as it does to me?

Bringing in Vulture would be good for Raimi and Co. The last film wasn't as realistic and dramatic as the first two. Bringing in Malkovich would make it very intriguing. If Hathaway is eventually on board for number 4, i feel they'll have her play Angelica Jones a.k.a. Firestar or Jessica Drew, a.k.a Spider-Woman. Bet Dub.

I'd rather see them do justice to Venom than the bringing the boring as hell Vulture.

First of all, yes, Raimi wanted Ben Kingley for the Vulture in #3: he didn't want Venom and that was pushed on him by the studio. He also wanted to end the movie with Topher Grace's character becoming Venom but the studio said no, perhaps fearing that Raimi was going to use it as an excuse to pass Spiderman 4 onto somebody else. Now Malkavich is a better choice for the Vulture so things...
First of all, yes, Raimi wanted Ben Kingley for the Vulture in #3: he didn't want Venom and that was pushed on him by the studio. Now Malkavich is a better choice for the Vulture so things worked out IMO. As for Felicia Hardy, well, her father was a cat burglar and she herself started out as a cat burglar so it isn't a stretch that she would be working with the Vulture. I suppose we could still see the Lizard this time as the actor playing him is coming back for this one but it won't be the main story and I'm okay with that.

What was the Vulture's super powers? I forgot. Picking through the trash? Sounds like a Direct To DVD. My advice is to have an army of deadites as the villians. Then just replace Spidey with Bruce Campbell as an aging Ash Williams and change the title of the film from Spiderman 4 to Evil Dead 4, then all will be right in the universe..

Sounds cool, but, if someone could help me out and I only scanned over previous posts so I apologize in advance, didn't Malkovich get offered either Green Goblin or Doc Ock and turned them down because he "didn't do those kinds of movies?"

After the third film, raimi more or less came out and apologised for it. If he is making a new one he would only make it his way. If the studio were telling him how to make it the film would set up the venom spin off or bring in carnage. There was other villians that the studio would have asked for like kraven, rhino or that emo vapire guy (since twilight is so in right now). If raimi wants...

It won't happen raimi is too smart to entertain the vulture with the subtle work he has done with the lizard. it will be like the first green goblin again. But hathaway would be great as felicia. Even if it is true, this is supposed to be raimis last so if it is don't expect a half hearted character like he treated venom.

This kind of goes against a solo Spidey movie but, as Marvel seems to want more crossovers, why not just have Spidey vs. Hulk or Spidey vs. Wolverine. I know that sounds lame, but I'd be more interested in it at this point. This vultress stuff really sounds too stupid to actually be true.

Well every lame villain needs an equally as lame side kick. Sandman was pretty lame so they made GG2 really lame so they would be on lame equalness. Let the lame characters keep on coming, we wouldn't want to choose popular villains that have good stories already attached to them and are actually liked by the fans.

Vulture would have worked great in cojuntion with Sandman instead of Venom on SPIDER-MAN 3, but won't work with just a side-kick type character. The rumoured plot just sounds ridiculous. I don't think it's true.

i can't see Anne Hathaway playing some new side kick to a lame villain. If Malkovich gets cast as Vulture that would be ok but Vulture really is a piss poor villain. I can't think of one thing he has ever done as a villain.

Great casting choice for Vulture but the Vulturess? Really? I'd honestly just as soon they cut her out altogether as do something that stupid and all it's going to do is piss the fans off more so than the gain they get from the general audience. How bout for Spider Man 5 they reveal that MJ is a Hydroman clone.

If this is true, Spidey 4 might just end up being worse than part 3. I always found the Vulture to be boring as hell and screwing with who the Blackcat is makes me think they're not even trying. I mean really, the Vultress? Wow.

LOVE Vulture. The best thing Raimi has done on these is stay mostly-fixated on the golden-age villains. Good lord people... Carnage? Venom was never interesting outside his origin story, and Carnage is less interesting than that.



Girl-vulture... not sure, but need to see an outfit. Not to be a pig about it, but I wasn't hoping for Black Cat because her personality and back story...

And I really like Hathaway, but I'm not sure how I feel about changing Felicia Hardy's character from The Black Cat to a Vulture sidekick. I mean, for someone who's a stickler for maintaining the integrity of the comics, this would be a tragedy.

I'm excited to see what Raimi does with Vulture, if he indeed is the villan, I was a little worried when he decided to have Sandman as the villan in S3 but turned out to be the best thing in the move, or at least one of the best things, I like Raimis take on the golden age Spidey villans so far with Doc Oc and Sandman, I can't wait to see what he does with Vulture, if he does become the villan in S4.

The Vulture was always a lame villian to me, i can't se how a bald guy in tight green spandex with wings will translate either, never mind this 'vulturess' idea. It's not hard to get the franchise back on track in my eyes: Kraven hunting The Lizard and spiderman in NYC, easy.

This sounds awesome but I kind of like the idea of "The Lizard" more as being the villan. If "Venom" wasn't screwed up in Spider Man 3, there would have been so many more directions this movie could have gone. But, oh well.

I guess I don't understand the appeal of The Vulture, but....how stupid of a villain was this to begin with? An old bald guy with wings? Not too scary to me...and were his wings part of his body (how could you function in society?) and if they are just sleeves he puts on, the modern audiences will not buy a flying old man who just puts wings on like Mr. Rogers slipping on a cardigan.

Maybe the vulturess thing is just for marketing and they never actually call her that in the movie. And hopefully Anne Hathaway wont be in a green costume with wings. that would be silly.

To answer your question: yes, it does sound ridiculous!
I don't hate the Vulture, I think it could make a nice transition from pages to screen, but the Vulturess? First of all, it contradicts (again!) Raimi's quote that there would be only one villain. Secondly, Anne Hathaway has too much class to take a part that crappy. Third, I think Raimi's work on the first two has been extremely overrated, that he's a much bigger problem to the franchise than...

I like Malkovich as vulture, but Dylan baker as lizard would be awesome, also, vulturess? seriously? Black Cat is iconic enough in her own right, i'm sure no one will mix her up with catwoman unless they're a bit silly, vulturess? it just sounds wrong, why have a female sidekick at all if she's called vulturess, waste of hathaway, so no i dont belive this
